649 poétiques (rédigées par Sautereau de Marsy et Imbert). Par. 1778-88. small 8°. 42 vols.

Of this collection the last two volumes are generally wanting. There are copies on Dutch paper in 8°. which are of some value.

650 ANNÉE littéraire (by Fréron the father, and others, from 1754 to 1776; continued by Fréron the son, Royon, Geoffroy, Brotier, and others, up to 1790). Par. 1754-91. 12°. 292 vols. (in France 240-300 fr.)

Greatly sought after, and seldom found complete. The first annual set contains 7 vols. and each of the other years 8. The year 1790 contains only 38 numbers instead of 60, whereof the last was published in November 1791. Of number 39 sheet S was indeed printed, but not published. Of Geoffroy's and Grosier's continuation in the year 1800 only 45 numbers in 7 vols. appeared.

The Année includes Lettres sur quelq. écrits de ce temps. Lond. (Par.) 1752–54. 12°. 13 voll.

Francisci de Alopa Venetum, III. idus Augusti M.CCCC.LXXXXiiij (1494)· 4°·

This work and Apollonius Rhodius, Callimachus, Euripides, and the Gnomæ (see below) were printed together at one and the same press, in capital letters, under the superintendence of Lascaris.

All five together are very rare, and only extant in the Laurentian library at Florence, and in four cases in England. (Beloe, anecdotes, III. 310.) The Anthologia and Apollonius are the easiest to be met with. (Wolf, lit. Annal. I. 237.

The book begins on the reverse of the first leaf with the above-mentioned title, is without catchwords and pagination, but with the signatures A-KK IIII, each sheet of 8 leaves. Altogether 272 leaves. Then follow 7 separate leaves without signatures, containing a Greek epigram and a Latin letter of Lascaris to Pt. Medicis, and after these, on the reverse of the 7th leaf, the colophon.

These 7 leaves (in Maittaire ann. T. I. 1719. p. 270-283. accurately reprinted from the original edition) are wanting in many copies, which then appear to be without

date.

and follows its MS. faithfully.

The magnificent Dresden copy on vellum, 9 French inches and 2 lines in height, and 5 inches 11 lines in breadth, contains A 3-6 twice, and A 3-6 is wanting instead. Should the opposite defect exist in any other copy, an exchange would be very welcome. In the same place also on paper; but the 7 last leaves are wanting in both copies.

678 ANTHOLOGIA. Florilegium diversor. epigrammatum in septem libros. Ven. in ædd. Aldi, 1503. 8°. 290 unnumbered leaves.

The first, the best, and the rarest of the 3 Aldine editions. A reprint of the preceding, with all its errors; but Aldus has subjoined at the end, in 21 pages, various readings from other MSS. and 19 epigrams, not before printed, and also 6 other pieces at the end of the 7th book. There are copies in which the title and first sheet are printed afresh. The older are distinguished by the last line of the title being θεται (where there is τιθεται in the others), and by the oft-occurring familiar abbreviations for e and ou, which in the others are always uncontracted. I have not observed farther differences. Both kinds are at Dresden. Copies also on vellum. The Aldine editions of 1517 and 1519 are nonentities. florilegium etc. (the same title). Flor. per hæredes Ph. Juntæ, 1519. 8°.

410 numbered leaves, and 2 unnumbered at the end, whereof the first is blank, and on the reverse of the second the Junta lily. Scarce, but very faulty. Ven. in ædd. Áldi et And. soc. m. Jan. 1521. 8°. 289 numbered leaves, and I unnumberIed with the anchor.

The 19 epigrams of the first Aldine edition, which had not before been printed, are here incorporated into the work itself, and only the best of the various readings (yet bad ones also amongst them) selected and received into the text. In printing and paper it is not so inferior to the first edition as many would have it to be. A copy on vellum is known.

Very rare in Venice itself, and not seen by Jacobs. A faithful reprint of the edition of 1521 as far as the first page of the 289th leaf. Then come two new additions, Sappho's hymn to Venus, and a pretended poem of Anacreon, both already previously printed. The indexes of things and names are really new and useful. It is held in equal estimation with the Aldine editions. 686
