John Brown was the servant of a lady who lived in the country, about six miles from the nearest town. He was only twenty, but was a good servant and liked his mistress and his situation. A valuable ring belonging to the lady required mending, and John was told to take it to the jeweller's in the next town. When crossing a bridge over a running stream, he foolishly took out the ring to look at it, when it slipped from his fingers and fell into the water. There was an old tree-stump under the water into which he thought it might have fallen, but he could not see it there, or anywhere else, although he searched for a long time. Fearing that, if he returned, he might be suspected of stealing it, or that, if not, he would be dismissed for his carelessness, he determined to run away. Years afterwards he came back. In the meantime he had been to the West Indies, and, having made money, was returning to his former mistress to tell her about the ring and to beg her acceptance of a handsome new one. As he was walking towards her house, he overtook a gentleman who was going there too. He told him the story of the ring, and added : "This bridge we are now crossing is the very one from which the ring was dropped, and there is the stump into which I thought it had fallen!" So saying, he poked the end of his umbrella into a hole in the top of the stump, and both he and his companion were astonished to see the longlost ring on the end of the umbrella.
