In this number are those of many who were unsurpassed in their personal charms, and in the lofty and heroic traits of their character; whilst all have been distinguished by the elevation of their rank, and the incidents of their career. Notwithstanding these circumstances, it has been designed to place the highest claim of the work to a favorable reception, upon the eminent skill and taste of the Artists which it should display. For this purpose, all these portraits have been painted and engraved only by such artists as were distinguished in their profession.
