With Prayer Book (? date), and Metrical Psalms (1745).

[F. F.] 795.

1738. The New Testament . . . with arguments of books and chapters; with annotations, and other helps, for the better understanding the text, and especially for the discovery of corruptions in divers late translations, and for clearing up religious controversies of the present times; to which are added tables of the Epistles and Gospels, controversies, and heretical corruptions. The text is faithfully translated into English, out of the authentical Latin, diligently conferred with the Greek, and other editions in divers languages, and the annotations etc. are affix'd to it by the English College then resident in Rhemes. The fifth edition (the first in folio) adorn'd with cuts . . .

[Douai?] 1738. fo.

No edition of the Rheims New Testament of 1582 had appeared since 1633. Cotton (R. and D., p. 47) suggests that this reprint was edited by Richard Challoner and Francis Blyth. For Challoner, see No. 824, 1750. Blyth was a 'Discalced Carmelite.'

Printed permissu superiorum, perhaps at Douai, but Cotton says 'most probably in London.'

Pp. xx, 646; followed by tables.

The editors prefix the following note to their reprint of the table of 'Heretical Corruptions': The following table has had so good an effect, that since the first edition of it the Protestants have had the grace to correct, by it, their edition of the N. Testament of 1660 in many places. But as falsehood is inseparable from heresy, and none can be fit to translate faithfully the Word of God, who have not first the Spirit of God in them, they have left many other passages here taken notice of, either totally unalter'd, or not alter'd for the better, sometimes even for the worse. We thought therefore it could not but be beneficial to the Publick to point those places out to them; which we have done by prefixing an asterism* at the beginning of every paragraph, which they have vouchsafed to amend. And where they have made any alterations, we have inserted them in the margin. Those texts which are here found with this mark † annex'd to them, are such as still remain corrupt in the latest edition of the P. Testament.'

The cuts' are an additional title and figures of the Evangelists, engraved by G. van der Gucht.

Possibly a reissue by the Dublin printer of an earlier London edition; since it contains a second general title (not engraved) bearing the names of the Assigns of Thomas Newcomb and Henry Hills, London, and dated 1711. But it does not exactly agree with either No. 712 or No. 716. The N. T. title has the Dublin imprint, and the date 1740. General title engraved. Text ends on Cccc 4 b. No Apocrypha.

London. 1741. 4°.

Daniel Scott (1694-1759), theological writer and lexicographer, graduated LL.D. at Leyden in 1719. While at Utrecht he became a Baptist, and joined the Mennonite communion. In this work he makes a point of showing that the Hebraisms of the N. T. have their parallels in classic Greek, and improves Mill's collection of various readings, especially by a more accurate citation of oriental versions.
