A curious work, the plates of which possess an artistic merit very different to that of the engravings usually found in Hispano-American books. Each of the handsome borders is different.

Clavigero and others have pointed out the defects and errors of this work, which nevertheless remains one of the most important collections of materials for the philosophical history of the New World. The loss of Torquemada would leave a gap which no writer could fill up.

Vinegia, Bindone e Pasini, 1535 VERY RARE AND VALUABLE. The appendix to Varthema consists of 24 pp. which contain "lo Itinerario de lisola de Juchatan novamente

ritrovata per il Signor Joan de Grisalve." This piece written by Juan Diaz, chaplain of the adventurous Grijalva, is the only authentic history of the expedition which it records, the second act in the great drama of American Discovery. The fertile shores of Mexico were visited by Grijalva, formal possession taken of them in the name of the Castilian king, and the new-found land christened by the name of New Spain.

(J. F.) Declamacion Oratoria, y alegato juridico al Rey en su Consejo de Indias, en defensa de las injurias inferidas por Pedro Domingo de Contreras, folio, limp vellum, 25s

1729

An embezzlement from the royal treasure had taken place between Acapulco and Vera Cruz, in the year 1709, in its transmission homewards from the Philippine Islands through those towns. Accusation was made against Veytia, the author of the Norte de la Contratacion, and the above orator, his nephew and heir, who, twenty years later, makes a defence which is a curious compound of pedantry and passionate fervour.

VERY RARE: the only other copy which has appeared in the London market fetched £17. 10s at the Abbé Fischer's sale in 1869. As for the book itself, it is a thick volume of nearly 700 pages, entirely treating on those sexual subjects which exercised the thoughts and pens of so many of the Spanish monks, and which they professed to study for the sake of their Indian converts. Alfonso Gutierrez, who styled himself a Vera Cruce, was one of the most distinguished of the missionaries, and remarkable for his perfect knowledge of the Nahuatl and Tarasca languages.

A very curious production by an unknown Mexican poet. The subject and the author's intentions were good, but the grotesqueness and the profanity of the book are, in many instances, strangely remarkable.

12489 VESPUCCI (AMERIGO) MUNDUS NOVUS. ALBERICUS VESPUTIUS LAURENTIO | PETRI DE MEDICIS SALUTEM PLURI | mam dicit, sm. 4to. four leaves, forty-two lines in a full page, text in Gothic Letter (No. 23 of the Biblioth. Americana Vetust.), red morocco extra, gilt edges, by BEDFORD, large and fine copy, £100. s. n. (about 1503)

EXCESSIVELY RARE: Harrisse quotes only one copy as known to him; which was in a private library in New York. This famous tract is, in any of its editions, now almost wholly unprocurable; its value as a prime monument of geographical knowledge having caused the gradual absorption in great libraries of almost all the copies which during the last fifty years have crept into the markets.

12490 VESPUCCI'S LETTERS, published by Varnhagen; AMERIGO VESPUCCI, son caractère, ses écrits, sa Vie et ses Navigations, par Varnhagen, sm. folio, map and 2 facsimiles, Lima, 1865Le Premier Voyage de Vespucci définitivement expliqué daus ses détails, Vienne, 1869-Nouvelles Recherches sur les derniers Voyage du Navigateur Florentin, et le reste des documents et éclaircissements sur lui, avec les textes (et une postface) map from the 1513 Ptolemy, and facsimile of Vespucci's letter, Vienne, 1870-together 3 parts, the complete Series, in 1 vol. sm. folio, sd. 18s; or hf. morocco, gilt edges, 283 1865-69-70

19491

Also sold separately: Le Premier Voyage de Vespucci, Vienne, 1869- Nouvelles Recherches, Vienne, 1870 — as described above, with the maps necessary to complete the volume, printed at Lima, 1865, stitched, 158 Vienne, 1869-70

These valuable publications, which are the entire result of Varnhagen's studies on Vespucci, contain all the letters of Vespucci, both authentic and doubtful, exactly reproduced from the originals. These are illustrated with literary and bibliographical notes, a critical analysis of his life, extracts from rare books and unpublished documents, etc.; which the Editor, as an influential and indefatigable scholar, had favourable opportunities of examining. The chief object, which he seems to pursue with curious eagerness, is to prove the rectitude and integrity of Vespucci's character. However, the concern of the modern world is with his ability and priority as a navigator in American waters, and the origin of the name given to the New World, and every thing necessary for any one who wishes to examine the matter thoroughly will be found in Varnhagen's treatises, by which it appears conclusive that Vespucci saw the American continent in 1497-8, in that First Voyage which has been discredited. In fact these disquisitions render completely useless, and supersede almost all previous studies upon Americus Vesputius.

Extr. d'avert.)

A copy sold in 1861 produced £13. The author was born in the city of Mexico in the year 1629. In early life he joined the Order of St. Francis. He spent his entire life among the Indians, whose love and good will he obtained by his untiring zeal for their welfare.

Madrid, 1701 Robertson seems to have been unacquainted with the work. Priced 1855, Lord Rothesay's copy, cf. ext. £7. 10s; fetched, 1859, Lady Webster's, calf, £4. 12s. The above copies are quite perfect, with the frontispiece and the leaf of colophon, which, according to Rich, are frequently wanting.

In a contemporary London catalogue, it is quoted at £4. 10s, with a note stating that Lord Stuart de Rothesay's copy was the only one which has occurred for sale in London for many years past. Curious to remark, I have two copies of the book in my hands at present, and recently disposed of a third and fourth; all of them having been bought in the public auction rooms within the last ten years.
