DOBSON (George E.) Catalogue of Chiroptera, thick 8vo. 30 plates, about 200 figures, cloth, 30s

[ocr errors]

1878 This volume contains a complete account of all the species of BATS known at present, 400 in number, of which 85 are desiderata in the British Museum. In the year 1843, when the List of Mammalia in the Collection of the British Museum,' was published, 136 species represented by 418 specimens were contained in the Museum ; 2666 specimens are enumerated in this catalogue, an increase chiefly due to the indefatigable zeal of the former Keeper of the Department, the late Dr. J. E. Gray, who at various times devoted himself to a systematic study of some of the families."

leaves; Book of Thel, 8 leaves; Vision of the Daughters of Albion, 11 leaves; America, a Prophecy, 18 leaves; Europe, a Prophecy, 17 leaves; The First Book of Urizen, 26 leaves; The Son of Los, 8 leaves; reproduced in facsimile from the Original Editions, 1789-91. The whole printed like them, on one side only; and on hand-made paper of uniform size, 1 vol. folio, half bound morocco, uncut, £5. 1876

ONE HUNDRED COPIES ONLY have been reproduced, as above, of the SONGS OF INNOCENCE AND OF EXPERIENCE, and of the PROPHETIC BOOKS, written and designed by the celebrated Poet-Painter, William Blake. The extraordinary beauty and rarity of these works are well known. Very recently, a copy of " America; a Prophecy," was sold by auction for £16. 5s, and "Vision of the Daughters of Albion," for £30.

Mr. Swinburne, in his "Essay on Blake," speaks of "that incomparable charm of form in which the Songs first came out clothed; the lovely and luminous setting of designs, which makes them precious and pleasurable to those who know or care for little else of the master's doing; the infinite delight of those drawings, sweeter to see than music to hear, where herb and stem break into grace of shape and blossom of form, and the branchwork is full of little flames and flowers, catching as it were from the verse enclosed the fragrant heat and delicate sound they seem to give back: where colour lapses into light, and light assumes feature in colour. All the tremulous and tender splendour of spring is mixed into the written word and coloured dranght; every page has the smell of April. Over all things given, the sleep of flocks and the growth of leaves, the laughter in dividing lips of flowers and the music at the moulded mouth of the fluteplayer, there is cast a pure fine veil of light, softer than sleep and keener than sunshine. ****And these Poems are really unequalled in their kind. Such verse was never written for children since verse-writing began, etc. FALCONER'S AND CAUTLEY'S FAUNA ANTIQUA SIVALEN

the same, complete in 1 vol. roy. folio, and 1 vol. 8vo. half green morocco, top edge gilt, uncut, £5.
