red morocco, the sides richly tooled after an old puttern, RARE,
£12. 12s
Edinburgh, by the Heires of Andrew Hart, 1635

There is a curious preface to the Psalms, by E. M., (one of the gentlemen of "his Majesties Chappel-royall,") in which he describes the Music as wholly Scottish tunes composed by the "primest Musicians that ever this kingdom had, Deane John Angus, Smith, Peebles, Sharp, Black, Buchan, and others famous for their skill in this kind."

The arrangement of the Music is quite different from that in the edition of 1615. The Catechisme is omitted in the book of 1635.

VERY RARE, only some half dozen copies being known. Cotton was of opinion that this first edition was privately printed by Lord Hatton for presents. It is probable that the old fly-leaf (no longer existing) bore the note of presentation of Sir Edward Nicholas, who was then in attendance on the King at Oxford.

Only four or five copies of this, the rarest edition of Nowell's Catechism are known to be in existence. The Greek version, dedicated to Lord Burleigh, is an ample testimony to the ripe and elegant learning of William Whitaker, then only twenty-six years of age.

8645 PSEAUMES DE DAVID, mis en Rhythme Francoise par Clement Marot et Theodore de Besze, avec nouvelle et facile methode pour chanter chacun couplet des Pseaumes, sans recours au premier, 12mo. a curious specimen of printing in "Lettres de Civilité," bound in russia, gilt edges, £20. s. l. Pierre Davantes, 1560 This volume contains the first known application of numbers for the notation of music. In most copies the name of Michel du Boys appears on the title-page, with the device of an open book within a border of branches. Copies are very rarely found as in this instance with the name of the editor, P. Davantes, and the device of the "Virgula Divina.” Such copies must be amongst the earliest, issued probably to friends alone. Davantes was the inventor of the new and peculiar system of musical signs which appear in this volume.

This rare and interesting volume forms a complete authoritative exposition of Luther's religious doctrines in the year 1543. The portions of it which may excite most curiosity are the "Notæ veræ Ecclesiæ," and the long dissertation "de Sacramento Altaris."

Bedford, £6. 16s 6d Regenspurg, 1554

Gallus was a pugnacious Reformer, the disciple of Luther, but managed to quarrel with Melancthon and others of his associates. Curious references to the doctrines of the Anabaptists, the Zwinglians, and others, are found in his preface. At the end of the Catechism is added a singular relation of an imaginary dream, in which Luther appears to Gallus and complains of the deteriorations taking place amongst the Reformers. This piece, entitled Klagrede, was intended as a reply to the Querela Lutheri, published in March 1554. The book ends with a funeral sermon by Hieron. Rauscher on the Pfaltzgräfin Elizabeth.

A rare and curious work, in Low German, upon the duties and practice of the clergy in the new Reformed church. Not the least curious part of the volume is the appendix, in Latin, prescribing a mild and conformal style of service for those monks and other ministers of the Catholic church who still retained their constitutions in Brunswick, so long as they should live.
