PREFACE. In the preparation of this Catalogue our aim has been to make it practical and useful, and to meet what seemed to us the special needs of the Law Department of the California State Library. The peculiar character of some of the works has rendered entire uniformity impracticable, and made a strictly logical analysis impossible, while deceiving title pages have doubtless sometimes misled us. We therefore make no claim to perfect work, either in method or matter. We believe, however, it will subserve the purpose for which it was intended, and trust the legal profession will find it useful. We have received valuable assistance in our labor from that excellent work, "The Lawyer's Reference Manual."
