§ 27. THE TRANSFIGURATION.

IX. 2 Going up into a high mountain with three apostles our Lord is transfigured. 4 Moses and Elijah talk with Him. 5 Peter, amazed and afraid, proposes to remain there. 7 A voice from heaven proclaims our Lord the Beloved Son. 9 He charges them to tell no one of the vision until He is risen from the dead. 10 They wonder what this means; 11 and enquire about the notion of the scribes that Elias must first come. 12 He tells them that the scribes were right as to the fact, but understood not the person intended.

them Elias with Moses. And they were talking
with Jesus. 5 And Peter answered and said to
Jesus, "Master, it is good for us to be here; and let
us make three tabernacles, one for thee, and one for
Moses, and one for Elias." 6 For he wist not what to
say; for they were sore afraid. 7 And there was a
cloud that overshadowed them; and a voice came
out of the cloud, saying, "This is my beloved Son;
hear him." And suddenly, when they had looked
round about, they saw no man any more, save Jesus
only with themselves.

9 And as they came down from the mountain, he charged them that they should tell no man what things they had seen, till the Son of man were risen from the dead. 10 And they kept that saying with themselves, questioning one with another what the rising from the dead should mean.

11 And they asked him, saying, "Why say the scribes that Elias must first come?" 12 And he answered and told them, "Elias verily cometh first, and restoreth all things; and how it is written of the Son of man, that he must suffer many things, and be set at nought. 13 But I say unto you, That Elias is indeed come, and they have done unto him whatsoever they listed, as it is written of him."

§ 28. MIRACLE ON THE DEMONIAC BOY.

14 The apostles in their Master's absence had in vain

endeavoured to cast out a dumb spirit. 19 Our Lord marvels at the want of faith in the world. 20 On the demoniac being brought before our Lord the evil spirit is violent. 22 The father entreats our Lord's compassion. 23 He promises it if the father will believe. 24 The man protests his faith, yet confesses its weakness and begs its increase. 25 Our Lord heals the child. 28 To the disciples' enquiry why they could not cast out the devil, our Lord replies that prayer and fasting were required.

§ 29. OUR LORD TRAVELS IN GALILEE.

29 Our Lord would remain unnoticed, journeying through Galilee, and teaching the apostles of his death and resurrection.

30 And they departed thence, and passed through Galilee; and he would not that any man should September. know it. 31 For he taught his disciples, and said unto them, "The Son of man is delivered into the hands of men, and they shall kill him; and after that he is killed, he shall rise the third day." 32 But they understood not that saying, and were afraid to ask him.

§ 30. LESSONS ON HUMILITY AND FORBEARANCE.

33 Our Lord chides the twelve for their desire of pre-
eminence, intimating that their greatness consists not in
their own qualities but in his commission.

bear with all who honour our Lord's name. 41 The
slightest regard to his disciples shall not lose its recom-
