PREFACE.

HAVING read the gospels of S. John and S. Luke, and made himself acquainted with their respective plans and designs, the student is recommended to apply his attention to that of S. Mark. He will thus be better prepared for an accurate knowledge of the remaining narrative.

1. Though the gospel of S. Mark is to a great extent taken from another, and based upon its recitals, it is, nevertheless, perfectly independent. It does not rest its credibility upon that other gospel, nor make any appeal to it; but assumes an authority of its own, and delivers its statements as one of the Oracles of God.

2. It is therefore inspired. It is, as the Church has always received it, part of the Word, which the Holy Spirit indited.a
