THE COOPERATIVE Index to Periodicals For 1885 EDITED BY W: I. FLETCHER WITH THE COÖPERATION OF MEMBERS OF THE AMERICAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION 1886 NEW YORK: PUBLICATION OFFICE, 31 and 32 Park Row LONDON: TRÜBNER & Co., 57 and 59 Ludgate Hill PREFATORY NOTE. In closing this first volume of the Coöperative Index to Periodicals in the quarterly form, the editor wishes to congratulate his fellow-workers on the success of their combined efforts in producing the most practically useful general index to current periodicals that has yet appeared. For the opinion seems to be general that the quarterly form, with the large increase in the number of periodicals indexed, is a decided improvement over the monthly. It is certainly reason for satisfaction that so large a number of periodicals have been indexed for the entire year, the list being but very little smaller than the one with which we commenced. In the form of a volume these four numbers will be found to constitute an exceedingly useful annual index. If the matter were all in one alphabet it would be somewhat more convenient, but the advantage of having it in four instead of twelve alphabets, as last year, will be obvious. A word is not out of place, here in recognition of the sad loss we have met this year in the death of Mr. S. B. Noyes, of the Brooklyn Library, who was at the same time one of the most faithful, laborious, and successful of librarians, and one of the readiest in this and similar works of coöperation for the common good. And it ought also to be mentioned here, that the work undertaken by Mr. Noyes, for this Index, has been assumed by Mr. C. A. Cutter, of the Boston Athenæum, in addition to that properly assigned to him. AMHERST COLLEGE LIBRARY, Jan. 15, 1886. W: I. FLETCHER. |
