The most important gifts of the month came from Mrs. Eliza Woolsey Howland and from Mrs. Henry Draper. Mrs. Howland's gift consisted to 21 volumes, including Pistolesi's "Real Museo Borbónico" (9 volumes, Rome, 1838-45), Flaxman's designs for the tragedies of ¿Eschylus, Retzsch's " Outlines of Burger's ballads" (Leipzig, 1840), Pinelli's illustrations for Don Quixote, Horeau's "Panorama d'Egypte," the whole given in memory of her husband General Joseph Howland. From Mrs. Draper were received the eight volumes by William Morris printed at the Chiswick Press from his Kelmscott Press Golden Type after his death and the closing of the Kelmscott Press; these eight volumes comprised his translations of the Odyssey and JEneid, the Volsunga Saga, House of the Wolfings, Roots of the Mountains, Grettir the Strong, Hopes and Fears for Art, and Architectural Industry and Wealth. Mrs. Draper gave also Reynolds' "God's Revenge Against Murder" (8th edition, London, 1740), the fifth edition (1832) of Wirt's Patrick Henry, and three aquatints by Mielatz "The Statue of Liberty," "Witch House, Salem," and " Old Tom's, Thames Street."

Other gifts worthy of mention came from: R. R. Bowker, 29 volumes and 56 pamphlets, including a number of publications of the Svenska Literatursällskapet; the Classified Catalogue of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, from the Library; from the French Consul General at New York, 33 volumes of French documents; from the Hungarian Central Statistical Office, 6 of its statistical publications; from the Landsbókasafn, Reykjavik, i volume and 18 pamphlets, Icelandic documents; from Cortlandt Irving, afile of Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine from 1835 to 1900; from the Library of Congress volume 7 of Worthington Ford's edition of the Continental Congress Journals, 1777, Washington, 1907; from Wilhelm Miller, 17 volumes and 1,600 pamphlets, all relating to agriculture; from Elihu Root, ii volumes, relating to Cuba and the Philippines; and from Mrs. Gertrude King Schuyler, 69 volumes, a continuation of her gift of Russian books made in 1901.

The German-American collection was in receipt of gifts from Edward Neder, the Katholische Union von Missouri, Karl A. M. Scholtz, and others.

The exhibition of American work in the print department at the Lenox Branch was continued, as was also the display of book-plates and engravings by the late E. D. French in the lower hall. On May i7th a few plates from Mrs. Frankau's work on J. R. Smith and the Wards were displayed in the lower hall. At the Astor Branch the plates from Martin's "Oriental carpets," with the collection of American etchings, lithographs and engravings, etc., remained on view.

The only change at the Branches was the installation of color plates from Molinier's "Royal interiors," illustrating furniture and interior decoration of the 17th and i8th centuries in France, at the 58тн Street Branch.

Picture bulletins and temporary collections of books on special shelves at the circulation branches were as follows: East Broadway, Athletics, Tales of the sea, Richard Wagner; Hudson Park, Music, Ireland, Western life; Ottendorfer, Adventures of the sea, Keeping house; б7тн Street, Little people of other lands, Building construction; Riverside, Country homes, Sports, Birds; Webster, Japanese industries, southern, industries; Yorkville, Spring indoors and out; 9ÓTH Street, Out of doors in May; Aguilar, Panama Canal; I25TH Street, Green things growing; Tremont, Animal stories, Barbary corsairs, colonial customs, Joan of Arc, Railroad development in the United States, Sculpture.

In addition there were bulletins on Memorial Day at sixteen branches, on May Day at eight branches, on new books at eight branches, on Ian Maclaren at three branches, on Spring at three branches, on Jamestown Exposition at three branches, on Gardening at two branches, on John Paul Jones at two branches, on Arbor Day at two branches, and on birthdays of celebrated men and women at two branches.
