Excerpt: ... CHAPTER VI. Of the evidence in support of the twenty resolutions of both Houses in reference to the preamble. The twenty resolutions of the two Houses of Parliament as to the inquiries to be made by committees on Railway Bills, comprise all the evidence required to be given in support of the preamble. They are as follows, viz. HOUSE OF COMMONS. That committees on Railway Bills do enquire into the following matters, and report specially thereupon when they report the respective Bills to the House. HOUSE OF LORDS. That Committees on Railway Bills do enquire into the following matters previous to the question being put upon the preamble, and that they report specially thereupon, except in the cases hereafter provided. 1. As to the proposed capital of the Company formed for the execution of the project, and the amount of any loans which they may be empowered to raise by the Bill; the amount of shares subscribed for, and the deposits paid thereon; the names and places of residence of the directors or provisional committee, with the amount of shares taken by each; the num ber of shareholders who may be considered as having a local interest in the line, and the amount of capital subscribed for by them; and the number of other parties, and the capital taken by them; a statement of the number of shareholders subscribing for 2,000/. and upwards, with their names and residences, and the amount for which they have subscribed. As the facts required to be proved under this resolution have all to be embodied in the report from the Committee, it is usual for the promoters of the Bill, to be prepared with a tabular statement of them prepared by the secretary of the Company, or some other party competent to give evidence on the subject.
