At the bacterial level and even among protozoa and some fungi and algae, the
gametes remain superficially identical; but in all metazoa and plants above the
fungal level, the sexes of the gametes are distinguishable one from the other.
Gametes that, for whatever reason, be it mutation or other, are too different from
the statistical norm are likely to meet in sexual fusion with more normal gametes
of opposite sex, and in this meeting, the extremes of deviation will be eliminated.
