VERY RARE.

About this time in England there was a clever forger of a Bank note who issued a number of forged notes. All these were collected by the Bank of England and destroyed. But those who endeavored to pass forged notes, even though they were innocent parties, were severely punished, frequently by death. This Cruikshank condemned, and decided that he would do away with the severity of the punishment if he possibly could. The result was the Bank Restriction Note, which in his later days he had pleasure in saying, did away with Hanging for passing forged

notes.

"I now return you Dickens's agreements-and I repeat what I said last night that there cannot be a doubt of your security in the matter.

Still I think you would be extremely to blame, where a matter of so much consequence to purse is at stake, if you did not take the best legal advice If due notice be not given to Mr. Dickens it may be construed into a waiving of your claim''; etc.

This doubtless refers to the disagreement with Dickens over "Sketches by Boz" and the projected novel "Oliver Twist." Ainsworth also writes at length regarding his own novel, "Admirable Crichton."

Should you want a figure, an ancient watchman, in or out of his box, very sleepy, will be just the thing for me"; etc.

The illustration occurs in Vol. III, p. 21 of "Master Humphrey's Clock. It did not appear in 49 as proposed, but was used in Part 54, forming an illustration for "Barnaby Rudge.
