Small 4to. 80 leaves, black letter; red morocco extra, gilt edges (by
Lewis)

Sir Thomas Chaloner's preface is well worth reading, as a racy piece of English, and as an exposition of his method of free translation.

There were two issues apparently identical until closely examined and collated. In the one the letterpress initials beneath the woodcut border of the title are T.B., in the second edition they are T.P. as here. The small leaf-ornament beneath the words" The praise of Folie" hangs downwards in the first edition; it is pointed upwards in the second. It is quite clear that Thomas Berthelet issued the one in 1549, and that the other was issued by his representative Thomas Powell after 1555 (the year of Berthelet's death).

"If one that is sandblynd would take an asse for a moyle, or another praise a rime of Robyn Hode for as excellent a making as Troylus of Chaucer, yet shoulde they not straightwaies be counted madde therfore " (On leaf H. 1).

There is but little difference between the third and fourth editions.
At one of the quarterly dinners of the Omar Khayyam Club, a letter was read
from Swinburne, who had numerous interesting things to say of Fitzgerald's
immortal translation. As to the greatness of the Rubaiyat, he says: "I know none to
be compared with it for power, pathos, and beauty in the same line of thought and
work, except, possibly, Ecclesiastes,' and, magnificent as that is, I can hardly think its
author comparable to Omar either as philosopher or poet." In the same letter he
recounts how in 1860 he and Rossetti bought the first editions of this great work at a
bookstall (mine) for a penny each, they having fallen absolutely dead at the published
price of 1s.

1899

"Mr. Heron-Allen's new volume on 'Edward Fitzgerald's Rubaiyat' is destined to set at rest for ever the vexed question of how far that incomparable poem is to be considered a translation and how far an original work.

"Mr. Heron-Allen prints Fitzgerald's quatrains on the left-hand page, and on the opposite side gives a literal translation of the Persian sources whence they were drawn. The result is a volume of extraordinary interest to the student, and a proof that besides being a great poet, Fitzgerald understood the difficult art of translation as it is, unhappily, understood by few.

"For the true artistic translation is not the most faithful rendering of the word, of the phrase, nor even of the illustration of the metaphor-often quite inappropriate to the genius of the language in which the translator works.

"The true artist sets himself to give the spirit of the original, and knows how to clothe it in metaphor and image of a corresponding, but not of an identical, felicity.

"Fitzgerald has thus produced a translation so essentially faithful, and at the same time an original poem of such exquisite beauty, that for English readers, he and Omar shine as stars of the same magnitude." - Literature, March 25th, 1899.
