This Prayerbook-which should be called by the name of its compiler, Richard Day-was first printed in 1569 in a single copy on vellum for the use of the Queen, which is still preserved in the Royal library. It was apparently not published till 1578, and copies with this date are extremely rare.

The preliminary leaves are identical with those of the 138 edition, with the sole exception that the date 1608 is added on the title, beneath "Stationers." The text of the book is entirely reprinted with some little redistrution of the woodcuts in the borders, and the final page has a different woodcut (tleark of the Stationers) with the date 1608 above it, and below: At London, Proted for the Companie of Stationers."

Only one other copy known, which is in Mr. Huth's library, and which has been
hitherto believed unique. Until the Huth copy appeared, it had been supposed that
Winkin de Worde printed the first edition of Withals, but the dedication to Sir Thomas
Chaloner proved that there could have been none earlier than that of 1553.
