ARCHEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF WESTERN INDIA. NOTES on the BAUDDHA ROCK-TEMPLES OF AJANTA : Their Paintings and Sculptures, and on the Paintings of the Bagh Caves, Modern Bauddha Mythology, &c. By J. BURGESS, M.R.A.S., F.R.G.S., &c., Archæological Surveyor and Reporter to Government, Western India. 4to, pp. iv.-112, with Thirty Plates, paper wrapper, 35.

Ajanta is situated at the head of one of the passages, or ghats, that lead down from the Indhyadri Hills, dividing the table-land of the Deccan from Khandesh in the valley of the Tapoti. Four miles W.N.W. of this town are the caves (some twenty-nine in number) to which it gives name. The walls of a considerable number of these have been covered with paintings of very remarkable merit.

The scenes represented are generally from the legendary history of Buddha and the Fatakas, th visit of Asita to the infant Buddha, the temptation of Buddha by Mara and his forces, Buddhis miracles, the Fataka of King S'ibi, legends of the Nagas, hunting scenes, battle pieces, the carrying off of the relics to Ceylon, &c. The date of the paintings is estimated to be of the sixth and seventh

centuries.

This work contains a detailed description of the caves, sculptures, and what is left of their remarkable wall paintings, with thirty plates of illustrations.

This edition has been thoroughly revised, with the addition of a new Calendar, Tide Tables for all Seaports, enlarged Lists of Government Offices, with salaries in all cases, Events and Notable Deaths of the year 1879, Latest Statistics of Foreign Countries, and the fullest Election Tables, Presidential and State, ever issued.

OPINIONS OF THE PRESS, 1879.

"It is greatly improved upon the previous year's issue, and now forms one of the handiest and most complete volumes of American Statistics which we have seen. To some extent, it copies the form of the 'British Almanac and Companion' in giving separate essays on selected subjects; but its chief value lies in the condensed tables of statistics relating to American industry and trade, which appear to be very carefully drawn up."-The Times.

"The second number of Mr. Spofford's statistical annual differs from its predecessor in containing only the most indispensable official tables. The work is also improved in arrangement, comprehensiveness, and utility. A volume which undertakes to supply a 'Treasury of Facts' is generally found to be an unwieldy mass of useless rubbish. The present work is an exception to this rule, inasmuch as it contains a very large amount of information that will be found valuable to students of the demography of America, and noʻpadding.' When statistical information other than American is given, it always has some bearing on the point under consideration. As far as we can see, the figures of this publication are more carefully printed and more to be relied on than American statistics usually are."-The Statist.

"A work which does for the United States most of what 'Whitaker's,' and part of what the 'British Companion,' do for this country, deserves a word of recommendation.”—Saturday Review.

"One of the most complete and convenient reference books published. This volume is one which few com mercial men could afford to be without."-Mining Journal.

"Contains much valuable information, chiefly of a statistical kind. It is well arranged, and care is manifest in every page."-Mining World.

Its contents are descriptive, statistical, and historical, and embrace a detailed account of the State's resources, productions and progress. For general convenience it has been divided into four parts. The first of these will answer for a travellers' guide, and relates to routes of travel, health and pleasure resorts, scenic attractions, and climate. The second part is historical, and the third contains much information concerning the State at large, and the farming ind live stock interests. Part four is devoted to the mines. The statistics in this department are of the most ela orate character, and are as accurate as time, labour, and research could make them, and the descriptions of mines and of mining and milling, together with the statements of requisite outlays from beginning to end, will prove especially serviceable to investors or capitalists.

A NEW DISCOVERY.

By F. L. STEWART.

[ocr errors]

This new process does not require any expensive machinery, is within the reach of every farmer, and requires no skilled labour nor elaborate preparition. With this book, and a small expenditure for necessary chemicals, every corn producer may become a sugar manufacturer, able to produce a superior article of sugar at a nominal cost. This new discovery is due to the indefatigable labour given by Mr. F. L Stewart to the subject of Saccharine juices, for some years past.
