Holiness, strong in the faith of Christ Jesus by which we give glory to both. Our prayer and praise shall alone hope for acceptance from His infinitely meritorious mediation. While He ministereth, we cannot seek Thy face in vain.

O righteous Father! O Lamb of God! O Spirit of truth ! The God of the Christians ! Blessed be Thy Name for evermore. "The grace of our Lord," &c.

THURSDAY MORNING.

For Thy

and the We will

WE will praise Thee, O Lord! among the people; we will bless Thee among the nations! merciful kindness is great towards us, truth of the Lord endureth for ever. give thanks unto the Lord, and call upon His name, and make known His deeds, and talk of all His wondrous works, and glory in His holy name, and seek the Lord and his strength, and seek His face evermore. Let our hearts rejoice while we seek the Lord!

But guilt and pollution cannot find access to Thee. Vengeance is Thine. Though hand join in hand, the wicked shall not go unpunished. All our works done in an unconverted state are but works of sin. The tears of remorse cannot

wash away one defiling stain. And we must have still been far off, alienated from Thee, but for the Expedient of Thy Wisdom and the Achievement of Thy Power, in Christ Crucified, to bring us nigh. We could have devised no plan, we could have offered no accommodation. It cometh forth from the Lord of hosts, who is wonderful in counsel, and excellent in working. We approach Thee in this Thine own, Thine only, way; we admire its greatness, we love its aptitude, we trust its self-sufficience; we extol it the more that there is none other, and that Thou knowest none other! So to be shut up to this, is our safety,-is Thy Renown!

Thou who pourest water on him that is thirsty and floods upon the dry ground,―Thou who hast the Spirit,-shed His choicest influences on our understandings and hearts. Through His power may we abound in hope, in joy, in holiness. May we sow to Him, and of Him reap life everlasting. May we through the Spirit mortify the deeds of the body. May He dwell in us as the earnest of our inheritance. By Him may we keep the good Thing given unto us. May His anointing teach us all things. Let a sweet proof of His love warm on our spirit. And having been led of Him throughout our life, may we when we die hear his closing testimony; and feeling that we are blessed by dying in the

Lord, may this be the perfect confirmation, Yea saith the Spirit!

Again the light visits us, and day calls us to our duties. To Thee we ascribe every convenience of our dwelling, and every comfort of our repose. The pestilence walketh in darkness, but Thou hast not suffered it to light on us. Unnumbered dangers might have risen against our unconscious helplessness,-the consuming flame, the armed man,-but Thou hast made us dwell in safety. Salvation, temporal as well as spiritual, is of the Lord.

We take our place once more in busy social life, the state to which Thy Providence has called us. We pray not to be taken out of the world, but to be kept from the evil. Whether our lot be more public or more quiet, we would think of it as cast for us. Let us not choose the scene of danger, nor rush upon temptation. Let us not attempt to serve two Masters, to serve God and Mammon. Wherever we are, whatever we do, may our heart be always Thine. Ever may we lift up our soul to Thee in every trial of temper and every contest of principle. May it be as well with us should we expire in our secular occupation, may we die as truly at the post of duty and in the spirit of piety, as though our soul went from us in immediate acts of supplication and praise. May we be found so doing,

that the Lord when He cometh may approve and say, Well done good and faithful servants, enter ye into the joy of your Lord!

Order our steps and keep our souls.

Let

sin have no dominion over us. Be at our right hand, and always before us. Suffer not our faith to fail. Far from us be all envy of unrighteous acquisition. Let us never complain that we have suffered from our adherence to truth and equity, -that we have cleansed our hearts in vain, and washed our hands in innocency. May nothing, not death itself, tempt us to remove our integrity from us. Let no deviation, the slightest, from truth, let no compromise, the smallest, of probity, sully our profession and wound our conscience. Let us attend to the things of good report. Let not our good be evil spoken of. Let us shun the appearance of evil. Let us ask, What do we more than others?

excellent than our neighbour.

Let us be more

And, abiding by

our principles, patiently and cheerfully may we suffer all the consequences of that fixed purpose and immoveable resolve.

Making mention of them always in our prayers, we entreat for the unregenerate of our lovers, friends, and acquaintance. Write their

names with ours in the book of life. Translate them from the power of darkness into the kingdom of Thy dear Son. May the communication

of their faith become effectual by the acknowledging of every good thing which is in them in Christ Jesus.

Restore to allegiance and happiness, O God! this rebellious world. Thou the Healer, cure its ills! Thou the Comforter, assuage its woes! May there be the restitution of all things! Peace be on earth, good will among men! Confirm the word of Thy servants, and perform the counsel of Thy messengers! Bring near Thy righteousness, and let not Thy salvation tarry!

We confess how unworthy we are to be heard, but our hope is in Thee. Thou hast raised up a horn of salvation. Thou art well pleased in Christ. Now we know that Thou favourest us. We ask all in His Name, for His sake! And to our Triune God we offer the sacrifices of praise continually! Amen.

THURSDAY EVENING.

WE have heard with our ears, O God! our fathers have told us what work Thou didst in their days, in the times of old. Thou hadst a favour towards them. They trusted in Thee and
