as lament: We would think of the deliverance which has been obtained by this glorified one. He has ceased from sin! We would cry unto him, That his warfare is accomplished! We would thank Thee that to him the sun, and the light, and the moon, and stars are no more darkened, nor the clouds return after the rain. We adore Thee that he departed in the true faith. Soothe to us the parting. Let us not be alone, because Thou art with us. Be the guide of youth, and the staff of age to very feebleness. Supply the void. Heal the sore. And when we think of the grave from which we have now retired, and when we visit it to weep there, let us wipe away our tears in the recollection that its sojourner has not fallen asleep to perish, that he is the dead in Christ, that he is sleeping in Jesus! Let us sweetly anticipate the period when broken ties shall be reunited, and inward friends shall receive each for ever! Let us look beyond our grave as well as this, when these days of mourning shall be ended!

PRAYER AT THE BEDSIDE OF THE DYING

CHRISTIAN.

O THOU Who rememberest that we are dust! Who art moved with compassion toward us! Who knowest the sorrow of our hearts! We bend, around this couch, in supplication for him who now is upon it awaiting the solemn hour of dissolution. Thus far Thou hast brought him! Thou bringest him still! But it is to death, and to the house appointed for all living. None can pluck him out of Thy hands! We glorify Thee in him! For the exceeding strength and comfort of Thy rich grace, we adore Thee! Mercifully consider Thy servant. His day is come to die, but it is one of those for which his strength is accordingly ensured. Perfect Thy strength in his weakness. Blessed Saviour! In all our afflictions Thou wast afflicted! Thou knowst what it is to die! Chill after chill crept through Thy Flesh! Thy Heart did sink! Thy Soul did pass away! We dare to ask Thy sympathy! Thou Awful Sufferer, help our departing friend to sustain his infirmity! Thou Who mightst, justly dread Thy Death, -overcome his every remaining fear! Thou Who didst know the horror of a Forsaking God, be in Thy clearest presence with his

spirit! Thou whose Eye fell on Her who is blessed among women, who didst entrust her to the disciple whom Thou lovedst,-enable him to leave with Thee friend and kindred! Thou Whose power hastened the moment of returning to Thy Father,-direct the moment of his end! Though long his Fore-runner, may he keep Thee in sight! May it be as if he read Thy name at every stage of pain and gloom, as if he could not let fall his foot but in the prints of Thine! Smooth his descent into the valley of the shadow of death! Be with him! May the Shepherd's tokens comfort the panting sheep! How solemn is this place! It is the gate of heaven! It gradually opens ! We seem to kneel in the presence of all that is sweet and solemn !

PRAYER FOR MISSIONS.

(It is the custom of many Churches to meet distinctly, and still more happily in Unions, on the First Monday of every Month, to intercede for the Conversion of the World to the Faith of Christ. Perhaps a good effect might be produced by devoting the Domestic Service of that Evening to the same purpose. The present Form is intended for such an object.)

THOU, O Lord! art Most High over all the earth! But Thou rulest not here as Thou dost in heaven: Dominion and fear are with Thee there, Thou makest peace in Thy high places; Thy numberless armies all obey Thee! Thou rulest in hell: The Devils believe and tremble! But on this world, Thou art set at nought. Thou art denied. Thou art disowned.

Thou

art braved. A strange god is with us.

Other

lords have dominion. Thy Name continually every day is blasphemed. They contemn Thee. They ask if there be knowledge in Thee. They say that they are delivered to do these abomi

nations. They are inventors of evil things. Gross darkness covers the people. Every where is man the same! They are altogether become unprofitable. There is none that doeth good, no, not one. There is, O Thou who requirest it! a recompense to man's error that is meet! How are their sorrows multiplied who hasten after another god! They are destroyed from morning to evening: they perish for ever without any regarding it! Refuge faileth them! They sorrow without hope. Like grass they are cut down and wither. We sigh and cry for these abominations. Our spirit is stirred within us. Our souls shall weep in secret places. Lord! by this vision our sorrows are turned upon us, and we have retained no strength!

We approach Thee, in the Name of Thy Son, to Whom Thou wilt give the heathen for an inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for a possession. We plead with Thee by the faith of Him Who is a Propitiation, not for our sins only, but also for the sins of the whole world! We pray in the Spirit Who shall be poured out upon all flesh! We offer intercessions for all men. Make Thy way known on earth, Thy saving health among all nations. May we regard each man as our brother, and each of us become his keeper. May all of us think of every other man as our neighbour, and
