of Thy hands, and according to the integrity of, Thy heart, still counsel our inexperience, and soothe our impatience. May the pure beam of Thine eye be ever settled over us to awe and to console our spirits. Let not our corruptions prevail. Let not our afflictions overwhelm us, nor our enemies prevail against us. Let them be turned back who seek our hurt. We are happy if Thou but know our soul in adversities. We are safe if Thou protect us, though a host should encamp against us. The Lord of Hosts be with us, the God of Jacob be our refuge!

The retrospect of every day is calculated to humble us. We confess, we mourn, before Thee our inactivity in those duties to which all others should be held subordinate. We confess, we mourn, our too great indifference concerning the strength and supremacy of holy principle. We confess, we mourn, that our simplest motive contains so large an admixture of what is unworthy and irreligious, of the world and not of Thyself. We confess, we mourn, the dimness of that impression which we have retained of everlasting things. How are we shamed by the superior self-denial and enterprise of those who serve and seek this earth! How much wiser are the children of this world in their generation than we who profess to be the children of light! How far more intent are they on their corruptible

crown, than we seem on ours which is incorruptible! For Thy Name's sake O Lord, pardon our iniquity, for it is great! Let not Thy longsuffering to us-ward cease nor weary! We need indeed a plenteous redemption, a great salvation! Multiply to pardon! May we receive grace for grace! What iniquity canst Thou not forgive ? What transgression hast Thou not passed by? Turn again, have compassion upon us, subdue our iniquities, and cast all our sins into the depths of the sea!

Continue Thy mercies to us, in health, in subsistence, in universal quiet and peace. May our unity be holy as the ointment of Aaron, and refreshing as the dew of Hermon. May our defence be in the shadow of Thy wings!

Bless our friends and relations. However we be separated from them, have Thou them in Thine eye, Thy hand, Thy heart. May they be obedient to the faith. By different paths may we be travelling to our home in heaven. There may we meet to part no more!

O send out Thy light and Thy truth. Remember the messengers of our churches among the heathen. By their service, turn the world from darkness to light, from the power of Satan unto God. Cast the accuser of the brethren down. May Satan fall like lightning from heaven. Sit Thou King for ever!

Command deliverance from every harm during this night, and compose our slumber. May He who was in all things made like unto His brethren,-who slept, though oft denied a place where He might lay his head,-who, amidst the hour and power of darkness in the garden, did but gently chide his disciples that the willing spirit should be oppressed by the flesh which was weak,-may He secure and soothe, and then awake us! Let to-morrow be as this day as to mercy, but far better as to obedience! Long as we live may we show forth Thy salvation, from day to day! In a Saviour's name we ask and offer, what we could not in our own. the Triune for evermore! Amen. "The grace of our Lord," &c.

Blessed be

THURSDAY MORNING.

O GOD of all the families of Thine Israel! These Thou knowest, in a special manner, only of all the families of the earth! We now gather around our domestic altar, and lift up our souls unto Thee with the sweet odour of this early offering! Ours is not indeed the altar of atonement, nor the offering of propitiation! But we have an altar, a great altar to look to, where we poor and guilty

creatures can take refuge, on which the Lamb was slain as the victim: we have a propitiation for our sins. We set not up our altar against Thine: nor would we entertain a hope but in that blood by which Thou dost reconcile us unto Thyself. We rear it but as our monument of gratitude, without efficacy and virtue; and simply lay upon it our oblation of thanksgiving and prayer. We humbly confess that we are vile in Thy sight may we be so in our own. Thou mightest put us away with abhorring: may we abhor ourselves. We need a Mediator when we present our vows as well as when we make supplication! By Him, the only Mediator, we now offer the sacrifice of praise, that is the fruit of our lips giving thanks unto Thy name.

Thou, Lord, searchest the hearts of the children of men. Our prostrate attitude, our seeming worship, cannot deceive Thee. Thou understandest our thought afar off. Put from us every desire to mock Thee! It is a solemn thing that Thou compassest our path, and our lying down, and art acquainted with all our ways. But if this assurance causes us to stand in awe of Thee, how fixed should be our attention and how reverent our feeling when we professedly seek Thy presence, imploring Thee to behold us and to incline Thine ear to the voice of our cry! Oh that every one of us may be intent and serious. Suffer not

a listless, wandering, thought and emotion. May we serve Thee in our spirit. May all that is within us bless Thy holy name. How dreadful would it be if any were heartless and hypocritical at a season so hallowed, and in a circle so small!

Behold from the habitation of Thy holiness and of Thy glory! We sinners do beseech Thee to hear us. To whom can we go but unto Thee? Save, or we perish. Humble us under Thy mighty hand. Bow down our stubborn haughty neck to the sweet yoke of Christ. Let us look to Thee with no pride of countenance. God be merciful unto us sinners. We entreat Thee to forgive our transgressions, accept our persons, and purify our hearts. Individually we crave this infinite benefit, this plenteous redemption. Wash us throughly from our iniquity, and cleanse us from our sin. May salvation come to this house!

How manifold are Thy mercies, how precious Thy thoughts, unto us, O God! We meet this morning in peace, and enjoy the multitude of Thy compassions. Our sleep might have been death. Our bed might have been in the invisible world. Our souls, required of us, might not have now even stood in Thy judgment, but have been banished into the outer darkness. It is of Thy mercies that we are not consumed.
