She was in the habit of copying all her writings into this book when they were finally finished; and it is therefore no bad reflection of her life and character. It does not consist of poems only. There are in it likewise smart criticisms, piquant characterizations, pleasant reminiscences of travel, and very funny sketches; and yet there hovers over all a certain earnest religiousness, without hint of pretension. Amid all manner of fun and gaiety the motto of the book was never forgotten; and strange enough it is that the last words written in it were these: "Blessed are the dead that die in the |
