PREFACE TO THE THIRD EDITION.

"Sois mon aide, O Dieu, que j'aime," is the motto inscribed in italics on the MS. book which we have just been carefully examining, with a view to gleaning anything of worth that may have been left behind. when the first edition of Miss Williams's "Twilight Hours" was published. She was in the habit of copying all her writings into this book when they were finally finished; and it is therefore no bad reflection of her life and character. It does not consist of

poems only. There are in it likewise smart criticisms, piquant characterizations, pleasant reminiscences of travel, and very funny sketches; and yet there hovers over all a certain earnest religiousness, without hint of pretension. Amid all manner of fun and gaiety the motto of the book was never forgotten; and strange enough it is that the last words written in it were these: "Blessed are the dead that die in the
