whether its leaves or flowers be considered; for a history of which we must refer to Dr. Sims's account in the Old Series of this work, and to that of Sir J. E. Smith, in the Exotic Botany, v. 1, under t. 31 and 32.

TRIBE II. NYMPHEEE. Water-Lily Tribe. Carpels several, manyseeded, included within the enlarged receptacle, with the stigmas radiating above the berry-formed fruit. Seeds with an arillus and a farinaceous albumen.

2. EURYALE. Salisb. Euryale.

Sepals, petals, and stamens adnate with the torus that covers the carpels, the fruit or berry therefore appearing inferior. Aquatic Herbs, very prickly; hence horrid and scarcely to be touched; from which is derived the name Euryale, one of the Gorgons.-(Linn. Syst. POLYANDRIA MONOGYNIA.)

1. E. FEROX (Prickly Euryale). (TAB. XCVI.)-Salisb. Ann. of Bot. v. 2. p. 73. Sims in Curt. Bot. Mag. ed. 1. t. 1447. De Cand. Prodr. v. 1. p. 114.-Anneslea spinosa. Andr.

CULTURE. This, like the preceding plant, is, in this country, considered a hot-house aquatic, requiring much room to be displayed to great advantage. By many it would be considered more singular than beautiful. It ripens its seeds in this country, and is propagated by them without difficulty. The leaves float on the surface of the water, and as they are sometimes more than three feet in diameter, require great space to look well. The seeds, which are enveloped in an insipid pulp, supposed to be of a cooling quality, are farinaceous, and considered wholesome food.

HAB. The East Indies, Nepal, and China. ST. Fl. Sept.

3. NYMPHEA. L. Water-Lily.

Sepals at the base of the torus; petals and stamens adnate with the torus, covering the carpels; and the fruit or berry is half-inferior and scarred. Flowers ample, white, rose-coloured, red or blue, never yellow. D C.-Name from vuun, a Water-Nymph, in allusion tc the loveliness and habitation of the plants. (Linn. Syst. POLYAN DRIA MONOGYNIA.)
