REPORT.

To the Honorable the Legislature of the State of New York:

The trustees of the State Library respectfully present this their Sixty-second Annual Report.

The number of books added to this department of the library during the year is greater than that of any of the twenty years preceding. This is accounted for by the fact that there were four hundred and fifty-nine volumes of the parliamentary papers of Great Britain added to this department. The increase exclusive of these papers is about the average number.

This collection of British parliamentary papers covers the period from 1806 to 1832, and forins an important addition to those previously secured.

[blocks in formation]

In the general library, the additions of books have been more numerous than the average number for the last ten years, but in accordance with the tenor of the ordinance adopted by the trustees at the last annual meeting, the purchases have been more restricted to books having relation to America, than formerly.

A large number of the additions have been in state and county histories from the growing "far west."

The modern county histories of both the east and west contain much of a seemingly trivial character when looked at from our point of view as contemporary with the events therein recorded; but if we possessed to-day a tithe of such records of the early settlers and of their towns, of New York, Virginia and New England, we would all be grateful for them.

The indications are that the annual sum to be appropriated by the Legislature for the library may soon be mostly absorbed in purchasing the class of books relating to America alone, leaving but a small sum for new editions of works of general reference, works on statistics and encyclopedias.

The number of visitors to the library for the purpose of historical reference is so large as to keep the small staff employed abundantly occupied in attending to their wants, and in making the books available for their use by catalogues and subject indexes.

A supplementary subject-index is preparing of the books added to the library during the last eight years, which will be issued during the year 1881. It will be an exceedingly brief catalogue of books arranged by subjects under the author's name.

The references made to the library in letters to the librarians during the year asking for information and for manuscript copies of documents are increasing in frequency.

All which is respectfully submitted.
By order of the trustees,

DAVID MURRAY,

ERASTUS C. BENEDICT,
Chancellor of the University.
