The cheese-box still (fig. 101) had a cylindrical body, connected by means Of three vertical pipes with a vapour-chest furnished with a large number, frequently as many as forty, of 3-inch discharge-pipes arranged in parallel lines. Steam was usually admitted into the discharge-pipes to mingle with the oil-vapour. The still had a dome-shaped top Of iron plate, and a double curved, steel-plate bottom. Its capacity was about double that Of the cylinder still, and it measured 30 feet in diameter by 9 feet in depth. It was set over a furnace on a series Of brick arches, as shown in the figure.
