THE INQUIRY

BY JAMES EDMESTON, ESQ.

ARE there no hearts which ache beyond the Line,
Where the pure gospel light hath sweetly shone?
Then should we bear to them that oalm divine,
That antidote to grief which we have known.

Doth death there aim no separating dart,
Cutting the dearest bands of life in twain?
Then should we tell the agonizing heart,
The separated may unite again.

Are there no minds in other lands distrest,
Toss'd on the billows of a bitter life?

Then should we point them to that place of rest,
Which no wave ruffles, and which knows no strife.

Are there no widows and no orphans there,
Left to the world's neglect, or tempests wild?
Then should we point them to that God, whose care
Is the lone widow and the orphan child.

I speak not now of higher motives still,
The world of darkness and the world of light
Yet, were it but to ease life's load of ill,

Compassion well might wing her swiftest flight?
