[Complete manuscripts by Byron are very rare. first page is dated Ravenna, January 13, 1821," and on the last page, which bears his initial signature three times, and is dated Ravenna, May 27th, 1821," is the following note: "Mem.-I began this drama on the 13th of January, 1821-and continued the two first acts very slowly and at long intervals.-The last three acts were written since the 13th of May, 1821 (this present month), that is to say in a fortnight." The first 12 pages are the manuscript of the preface, and the second appendix to "The Two Foscari," in which Byron defends himself against the charges of plagiarism and of revolutionism. The last page and a half are notes to danapalus," taken from Mitford's "History of Greece." The writing of these is so different as to almost lead one to believe them to have been the work of another hand, were it not for certain well-marked characteristics; but these notes were probably made at a much earlier date, while at the time of writing the drama Byron was in an unsettled, highly-strung condition of mind and body, and the writing shows great indecision and haste. It is full of corrections and deletions. The manuscript was the property of John Murray, Byron's publisher, and has his ex-libris on the inside of the front cover.
