[Original unpublished manuscript, containing notes jotted down by Walpole in his younger days and used by him as a Common-Place" book for some of his later writings. Though the manuscript is paged from 322 to 526, it covers the complete work, from April, 1739 to May 19, 1744, with the caption appearing above given on first page. Contains many markings and additions in pencil showing that the author must have used the work as reference for future studies. The index contains

entries on 153 different persons or subjects, 4 pages of which relate to Alexander Pope, covering his entire life from the date of birth till his death, showing how early he began to make verse, his various satires and poems, his character, etc. Among other authors who are commented on in the text as to their character or work, and who are listed in the index, are Addison, Betterton, Bolingbroke, Cibber, Dryden, Gil Blas, Othway, Rabelais, Rowe, Shakespeare, Spenser, Steele, Waller, Wycherley and others. Among other subjects, Walpole treats on the following, which he lists in his index: Air, animals, beauty, blank verse, bull-feasts, clergy, divorce, education, English writers, fig trees, French writers, gardening, history, Italy, King of Sardinia, marriage, metaphysics, Mexico, Moors, mysteries of the heathen, novels, painting, physicians, plays and players, reasoning, religion, rhime, romances, schools of the Jesuits, SouthSeas, spies, stays, Venice, versification, etc.] Walton (Izaak).
