There is only one edition of this rare book, but some title pages bear the date of 1633, and others 1634; the only difference appears to be that the former have a dedication to Henry of Bourbon, the latter to Charles I. Warton says that Middleton, in his Life of Cicero, was much indebted, without acknowledging it, to this curious and little known work. It comprehends a history of Rome, from the foundation of the city to the time of Augustus. In this book Middleton found every part of Cicero's own history, in his own words, and his works arranged in chronological order, without farther trouble. The impression of this work, being shipped for England, was lost in the vessel, which was cast away, and only a few copies remained, that had been left in France.

This interesting volume was republished by Dr. Parr, accompanied by his famous Preface. He states this original edition to be so rare, that only 3 or 4 copies were to be found in the kingdom. The present has the autograph of Henry Homer, who superintended Dr. Parr's edition through the press.
