I HAD had no thought of even reading Dr. Newman's Apologia pro Vitâ suâ. I know pretty well, in theory and practice, what Romanism is; and the history of the popes is open to every one. But the book has been put into my hands by others, and so far pressed upon me; and I have read it: I cannot say it has won my respect. It has certain charms about it; and the present state of things clothes it with interest. I think it likely to attract and win no small number of minds. There is a seeming candour on the surface, and men's minds are prepared for it, and "quod volumus facile credimus." The circle of university affections is most powerful-formed as they are just when the heart is fresh and growing to manhood-and amiable, and the reference to them is one of the attractive points of Dr. Newman's book, but cannot decide what salvation and the Church of God is. If we penetrate below the surface, I do not think the charm of the book remains. The
