ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

A 3-month stay on the island of Dominica by the senior author from January to March 1965 and our extensive collections from the island were made possible by facilities extended by the Bredin-ArchboldSmithsonian Biological Survey of Dominica under the very able leadership of Horton H. Hobbs of the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C. We are especially grateful to the sponsors of the Survey, J. Bruce Bredin and John D. Archbold, for making these studies possible. We are grateful to the following entomologists participating in the Survey who collected Culicoides material for us: Dale F. Bray, J. F. Gates Clarke, Oliver S. Flint, Jr., Paul J. Spangler, Theodore H. Spilman, and Edward L. Todd. Our Dominican collections are in the U.S. National Museum (USNM) in Washington, D.C.

The senior author also had the opportunity of making collections in Jamaica for several weeks in February of 1969 and 1970. He is grateful to Thomas H. Farr of the Institute of Jamaica in Kingston for assistance. Extensive and productive light trap collections from Jamaica were made available to us by Robert E. Woodruff of the Florida State Department of Agriculture, Division of Plant Industry, and E. G. Farnworth of the University of Florida in Gainesville. To them we express our sincere thanks.

The junior author was able to collect in Puerto Rico on a U.S. Army Medical Department survey in June and July 1952, and his material was presented to the U.S. National Museum. We acknowledge the unfailing kindness of Irving Fox of the University of Puerto Rico in San Juan in responding to our numerous requests for loans of specimens and for information on Caribbean Culicoides during 1952-72. Dr. Fox has been most helpful, especially in the early years of our work when we most needed assistance.

We also acknowledge the cooperation and assistance of the following individuals and institutions for the collection or loan of West Indian material, personal assistance, advice, and information: Thomas H. G. Aitken of the Rockefeller Foundation, now at Yale University School of Medicine, New Haven, Conn., and R. Martinez and A. Guerra, members of his staff at the Trinidad Regional Virus Laboratory in Port of Spain; Peter R. Bacon of the University of the West Indies in St. Augustine, Trinidad; Fred D. Bennett of the Commonwealth Institute of Biological Control in Curepe, Trinidad; Richard F. Darsie of the University of Delaware, Newark; John B. Davies of the Trinidad Regional Virus Laboratory, Medical Research Council, Port of Spain; M. E. C. Giglioli and John E Davies, Mosquito Research Research and
