1248 ARROYAL, Leon de. Odas. Madr., 1784. 8°.

1249 ARS memorandi notabilis per figuras evangelistarum. without place or date, small fol.

This remarkable xylographic production contains 30 leaves only printed on one side with the rubber, namely 15 leaves of text, and 15 leaves of representations, which contain the contents of all the chapters of each evangelist in mnemonic figures. There are 2 different editions. The first is somewhat irregularly and faintly printed, and lines 17 and 18 of the 1st leaf run thus, tolle grabactum tuum et ambula (Dresden, (bought in 1774 for 231 dollars,) the king's library in London, earl Pembroke, the Bodleian, Spencer.) The second has blacker printing, sharper woodcuts, and runs thus in another place, tolle grabatum tuum et vade (Vienna, Nuremberg, Leipsic council-library, and 1 leaf Dresden). Concerning the groundlessness of Dibdin's assertion in bibl. Spenc. T. I. p. IV. that it was printed even before 1430 and is the oldest block-book, see Hall. Lit. Zeit. 1817. b. III. p. 635.

Printed under the title, Memorabiles evangelistar. figuræ (c. versib. Pt. de Rosenheim ed. G. Relmisius, i. e. Simler), per Th. Anshelm, 1502. 4°. 17 leaves. ap. eund. 1503. 4°. 17 leaves (a different impression), ap. eund. 1504. 4°. Rationarium evangelistarum, ap. eund. 1505 or 1507 or 1510 or 1522. 4°. The last edi

tion (18 leaves) a short time ago was sold in England for 8 guineas.-A German edition, without place or date, 4°. 16 leaves with 26 lines is described in Panz. deutsche Ann. II. 25.

1250 ARS memorativa incipit feliciter (auct. Jac. Publicio). without place or date (Col. J. Guldenschaff.) 4°. Gothic letter with woodcuts.

Without signatures, catchwords and pagination; 14 leaves of text and 8 leaves of

woodcuts. I10 fr. Vallière.

1251 ARS moriendi. A xylographic production, 24 leaves printed on one side, viz. 2 leaves of preface, 11 leaves of representations and I leaves of text.

Heineken idée générale p. 399 sqq. describes this book in the most accurate manner, and distinguishes 7 Latin editions. I follow his order.

I. In small folio, leaf 1. line 1. Ars moriendi: leaf 2 begins, dientia secundo. The representations are enclosed with two lines. (Wolfenb. and 7 leaves Memming.).

II. In small 4°. leaf 1. Ars moriendi: leaf 2. Scd'm căcellariu. The representations only enclosed with one line. Dibd. bibl. Spenc. T. I. p. XVI. considers it to be the first edition. (Vallière 1610 fr., Camus de Limare 1280 fr. Lord Spencer has another copy.)

III. In small folio, leaf 2. Secundo ut recognoscat. The representations are enclosed with 3 lines. (Defective copies at Harlem and Frankfort on the Maine.)

IV. In 4°. leaf 1. ends primo ut credat: leaf 2. begins, xpiano credere debet letus. The representations enclosed with 3 lines. (Munich.)

V. In folio: the leaf, Temptacio dyaboli de fide is marked underneath with b. The representations are enclosed with 3 lines. (A defective copy at Hanover).

VI. In folio, leaf 1 and 2. of the same sort as the 4th edition, but the inscriptions of the representations are in German, although the text is Latin. (Wolfenbuttel.)

VII. In small folio, certainly xylographed, but with a press and printed on both sides only 14 leaves. It agrees with the 4th edition, but the pictures are enclosed with only 2 lines. According to Dibdin I. c. p. XXV. not printed before 1480. (Dresden, Wolfenbuttel, Munich, Spencer.)

VIII. In folio, leaf 1. concludes, sicut bong credere debet. The representations enclosed with 3 lines. First described in G. W. Zapf v. einer höchstelt. u. unbek. Ausg. d. Ars mor. Augsb. 1806. 8°. who considers it to be one of the first.

IX. In small folio, German; leaf 1. begins, Dieweil nach der Lere. At the end, Hans Sporer pruff-moler 1473. (Zwickau). X. German. At the end, Ludwig ze Ulm. (Count Pertusati at Milan.)

diceo, 1518. 4°. and as it is dedicated to Leo X. it must have been printed before 1522. See also EURIPIDES. ARSICCIO intronato (l'), see Caz

ZARIA.

1252 ARS moriendi. Printed with 1254 ART. Lart au morier (sic). A moveable and cast types.

Of this work I know the following editions:

I. Ars moriendi. Without place or date (about 1480.) 4°. Gothic letter. 14 leaves, whereof are 13 pages of text and 12 pages of representations (240 fr. Vallière.)

II. Ars moriendi ex varijs Scripturarum sentencijs collecta cum figuris &c. without place or date (in the 15th century) 4°. Gothic letter and 30 lines, not including the column-title. (Spencer.)

III. Ars moriēdi ex varijs scripturarū sententijs collecta cũ figuris &c. without place or date, 4°. Gothic letter, 14 leaves with 14 woodcuts. In a full page 31 and 32 lines.

IV. Entirely like the preceding and in the same type. But in leaf 3. the last word is cosideret, which, in the previous edition is consideret. Besides this there are several orthographical differences.

V. Ars moriendi ex Variis ententijs (sic) collecta cum Figuris &c. Nrb. p. J. W(eissenburger), without date. (about 1504.) 4°. Gothic letter, 14 leaves with 14 woodcuts. Also, ib., id., 1512. 4°.

The author of this piece was Mth. de Cracovia. Altogether different from it are Speculum artis bene mor. and Jac. Carthus. de arte b. mor. In German, Ein loblich and nutzbarlich buchelein von dez sterben. Lpz. 1494. 4°. 16 leaves with 13 woodcuts, also Lpz. 1496. 4°. In Dutch, Sterfboeck. Zwol, Pt. van Os, 1488. and ib., id., 1491. fol. with woodcuts. In French, Le livre intitulé, L'Art de mourir (Par. Ant. Verard.) without date, folio, Gothic letter. 1253 ARSENIUS. Præclara dicta philosophorum, imperatorum et poetarum ab Arsenio archiep. Monembasiæ collectæ (gr.)—In it is contained, Γερας εἰ μονομάσειας σπανιον των σπουδαίων etc. without place or date, small 8°. 2 parts in 1 vol.

A costly book, of which the second part is extremely rare. Part I. contains 116 leaves, and begins with a Greek and Latin title. Part 2 contains 30 leaves with the signatures, and. In the 1st leaf is a Greek epigram. The type is the same as in Porphyrii quæst. Hom. Rom. in gymnasio me

xylographic production, small fol.

Brunet Manuel du libraire, T. III. p. 490. first made known this most remarkable piece, which Messrs. Vandercruisse at Lille possessed.

24 leaves printed on one side, viz. 2 leaves of preface, 11 leaves of representations, and I leaves of text. The wooden blocks, which contained the representations, appear to be the same with those in the 2nd Latin edition. Both pages of the preface contain together 58 lines, not including the superscription, Lart au morier. The preface begins, Ja soit que selon le philosophe, and concludes, considere deligentement. The 24th and last page concludes with these verses: Bonne remonstrance par figure et exposicion p escripture

De chose utile et necessaire et cest miroir vrai exemplaire.

Si entendes a bon desir pour bien vivre et bien morir.

This costly piece is probably the oldest printed French book yet known.-Another French translation, without place or date, (Brügge, Colard Mansion about 1472 or 1473.) fol. (22 leaves) begins, Combien que le phylosophe. See below GERSON La doctrine de bien vivre.

1255 ART, (l') et science de rhétorique pour faire rigmes et ballades. Par., Ant. Vérard, 10 Mai, 1493. fol. Gothic letter. 14 leaves.

A copy on vellum in the royal library at Paris.

(at 8 fr., in 4°. at 40 fr.). The number of volumes is not yet certain.

The first author of this important work was Mr. Dantine, whose labour, after his death, was completed and published by Ursine Durand and Charles Clémencet, Par. 1750. 4°. A second enlarged impres

sion, ib. 1770. fol. (also on large paper). The 3rd impression was superintended by Fr. Clémencet, who made almost an entire new work, which appeared, Par. 12 1783. fol. 3 vols. (also on large paper.) Before using this it would be as well to correct the errata in various parts of the work. The abovementioned 4th impression is considerably corrected and enlarged by St. Allais and

Billy from the papers left behind him by

Clémencet.

Clémencet also composed as the 1st part of [this work an Art de vérif. les dates AVANT J. C. which was already prepared for the press in 1789, but from the circumstances of the time not published. This will now appear immediately after the end of the above work, and in a similar form with it, in 5 vols. in 8°. (40 fr.) or in 1 vol. in 4°. (50 fr., on vellum paper 90 fr.) It is said also that copies will be struck off in folio, (60 fr.) to complete the 3rd impression.

This was to have been a general catalogue of all the oriental MSS. in the Vatican; but 3 volumes only have appeared, which are extremely rare, because on the 30th of August, 1768, a fire destroyed the entire impression. Of the 4th vol., which was to have contained the Arabic MSS., only 80 pages were printed. The Royal library at Paris has the 3 volumes, but the library at Rostoch has also the 40 leaves of the 4th vol.
