2347 BIBLIA SAXONICA INFERIOR. Without place or date, (Cologne, about 1480.), large fol. with woodcuts, Gothic letter.

The first low Saxon, or Cologne Bible as it is called. 2 columns of 57 lines, without signatures, catchwords, and pagination. It commences, Die born der ewyger wysheyt. At the end, Ein salich ende hefft dat Boek der hemelické apenbaringe. sent Johans des ewangelistě vñ dar mede de gantse bybel. dar van gade dank vnde loff sy in ewicheyt. Amen. In other copies (for example in that at Dresden), the colophon is to this purport, Dat boek der hemeliker apenbaringe sunt Johannes des Apostels ende Ewangelisten: ende daermede dat gantze boeck der golliker Schrifften die Bybel: hefft hyer ein selich einde daer van gaede sy danck. loff. ere ende glorie in ewycheit Amen. Altogether the copies have such differences, that it might well be assumed that there are two distinct editions. The dialect is properly more Flemish than pure low Saxon.

2361 BIBLIA Pauperum or Historiæ veteris et novi testamenti. A xylographic production without place or date, small fol.

This book, on account of the text placed close beside the figures, comes next after playing-cards, and is therefore probably the oldest xylographic production; it contains representations from the history of the Old and New Testament (on each leaf, 2 halflength figures above, in the middle 3 historical representations, and 2 half-length figures again below) with a short explanation. There are 40 leaves printed only on one side, so that two printed sides are always over against one another, and then two blank pages follow, which in some pies are pasted together (in this manner 21 leaves.) Each leaf is marked with a letter of the alphabet in the middle between the two half-length figures at the top of the page: viz. leaf 1 with a large A, leaf 2-20 with b-v and leaf 21-40 again with a-v. The latter alphabet is distinguished by having each letter placed between two

dots.

CO

Heineken (idée generale 292 ss.) distinguishes 5 editions.

1.) The letters n, o, r, s of the second alphabet have no dots beside them. (The council-library at Leipsic, Spencer, Bodleian, Corpus Christi college library, Oxford.)

II.) In leaf p in the 2nd alphabet, Moses's cap has two horns above. (Dresden, Berlin (only 38 leaves), Hanover, (only 17 leaves), Th. Grenville in London (from M'Carthy's collection for 750 fr.) previously in Vallière's (780 fr.), and Gaignat's (829 fr.). Of the same edition were the copies of Mr. de Boze (sold in 1753 for

1000 livres), Verdussen's (1776 for 250 Dutch gueldres), and Crevenna's (946 fr.)

III.) In the same leaf Moses's cap has here a little round button instead of horns. (Gaignat had a copy of this edition, (according to Heineken.) In Dresden there are only the first 21 leaves of this edition.)

IV.) This has no text at all, and consequently is probably the oldest edition. (Vienna, but the first leaf is wanting.)

V. Is the latest edition, enlarged and containing 50 leaves, which are marked with A-Z and a-≈ and 4 other marks besides. (Wolfenbüttel.)

A fine and complete copy of one of these editions was purchased by the duke of Devonshire at Edwards's sale for 210l.

There is also an edition with the text in German of 40 leaves marked with a-z, A-L and 3 other marks. At the end is the year 1470, (Gotha, and a more recent impression of only 22 leaves at Wolfenbüttel). Eschenbung's copy (Panzer's German Annals, Suppl. 31.) has the colophon, Friedrich Waltern Maaler in Nördlingen vnd Hans Hürning Habent dis Buch mit einander gemacht.-A second edition of 40 leaves, with the year 1475, also at Wolfenbüttel; and a third edition also of 40 leaves, with the year 1477 at Meinungen.

There are also two printed editions (at Bamberg by Alb. Pfister about 1462). in small fol. one with the text in Latin, the other with it in German. Both have 17 leaves printed on both sides, begin on the recto of the 1st leaf with the word ysaias, and are, with the exception of the text, exactly like each other. Complete copies of the Latin editions are at Paris and in lord Spencer's library, a defective copy (the 17th leaf wanting) in Wolfenbüttel. Lord Spencer has the only known copy of the German edition.

As to the rest, these representations were originally pictures in the churches for the instruction of the people. See Fiorillo artist. Schrr. I. 38. Lessings Beitrr. II. 317. 2362 BIBLIANDRI, Thdr., de ratione communi omnium linguar. et literar. commentar. Tiguri, 1548.

Little sought after certainly, but historically important. It contains the works of Faustus Socinus, Jon. Schlichting, J. Crell, J. L. Wolzogen and Sm. Przipcow's works.
