In the 4th edition, Misena, Erbstein, 1788. large 8°. (12 gr.) the observations and translation are omitted, but the fragments are subjoined, and the index enlarged. Of the first edition, Lips. 1753. 8°. those copies are remarkable, in which is to be found the preface directed against

The first edition, but incorrect. Ti Agamemnon and the Choëphoræ, of whi the first is defective at the end, and the last at the beginning, appear here thrown into one another as one piece.

180 eædem, gr. (e rec. Adr. Turnebi) Par., ex off. Turnebi, 1552. 8. 212 pages and 4 unnumbered leaves at the beginning.

A fine edition, and especially amended in the 3 first tragedies from a MS. yet still with the same confusion in the Agamemnon. Renouard has a copy on large paper.

tragœdiæ VII., a Fr. Robortello nunc pr. ex mss. libris expurg. ac suis metris restitutæ. Ven., Scottus, 1552. 8°.

12 leaves of preliminary matter, 265 numbered pages, and 3 leaves at the end, whereof two are blank. Some bibliographers look upon this as the first complete edition, because the title announces 7 tragedies; it contains however not a single verse more than the Aldiné edition, and has only the peculiarity, that Robortello for the first time separated the Agamemnon and the Chöephora, and had them printed as two separate tragedies. To which is added, Scholia in Eschyli tragg. omnes, collecta a Fr. Robortello, Ven., Valgrisius, 1552. 8°. 10 leaves and 216 pages. 182 tragg. VII. quæ cum omnes multo quam antea castigatiores eduntur, tum vero una, quæ mutila et decurtata prius erat, integra nunc profertur. Scholia in easd. plurim. in locis locupletata et in pene infinitis emendata. Pt. Victorii cura et dilig. Ex off. H. Stephani, 15574°. 4 leaves and 395 pages.

Here the Agamemnon appears for the first time complete. The text and scholia are greatly amended and enlarged from good MSS. Appended are emendations by H. Stephens from 13 (?) MSS. 183 — eadem (gr) op. Gu. Canteri. Antw., Plantin. 1580. 16°.

A pleasing edition and corrected with especial reference to the metre. Without scholia. Copies with a broad margin are

scarce.

184 — eæd. c. scholl. grr. omnibus, deperditor. dramatum fragmentis, versione et commentario Th. Stanleji. Lond., Corn. Bee, 1663, fol.

Some copies, in other respects exactly alike, have in the title, Lond., Jon. Hart, 1664. The two leaves immediately fol lowing the title, which contain the privilege of Charles II. and the dedication to H. Puckering alias Newton, are wanting in the copies of 1663. The dedication to Charles II. mentioned in some catalogues is only the privilege mistaken for one. A copy with the privilege and dedication ought to have 16 unnumbered leaves of preliminary matter, and 886 pages. Stanley has taken the edition of Canterus for his basis, collected all the explanations up to that period, augmented the scholia, and subjoined a new translation.

The Glasgow edition of 1746 forms its groundwork. The text, especially in the Supplices, has important, and in part valuable alterations, and is printed after a copy furnished with R. Porson's corrections and conjectures, but without the professor's knowledge: for this reason in the edition of 1806 he did not acknowledge this as his. It is in other respects fine, and the impression not large (63 copies?). On very large paper only 11 copies are said to be printed. Sometimes plates are annexed to it,

engraved by Piroli after designs by Flax

211 ÆSOPUS. Vita per Max. Planudem, gr. Fabulæ, gr. Vita et fabulæ, lat. redditæ per Rinucium Thessalum. Fabulæ selectæ gr. et 1. ad verbum redditæ, edente Bono Accursio.-At the end, Bonus Accursius pisanus impressit, without place or date, 4°.

The first most rare edition, printed at Milan about 1480. According to the signatures it is divided into three parts. Part I. begins without any title on the recto of the first leaf, Bonus Accursius—J. Fr. turriano salutem plurimam dicit. Leaves 2-32, Esop's life by Planudes in Greek. Leaves 33-70, Æsop's fables in Greek (to the number of 144). The reverse of the 70th leaf is blank. The whole without signatures, catchwords and pagination, twenty-five lines in a page. Part II. leaves 1-32, Vita Esopie græco latina per Rynuciu facta. Leaves 33-59, 100 fables in Latin by the same. The whole has the signatures, a-g, and twenty-five lines in a page. Part III. of thirty-eight leaves, with the signatures, A-E, containing a second letter of Accursius, and a selection of fables, Greek and Latin, in two columns. A perfect copy ought therefore to contain 167 leaves in all, but sometimes the second part, sometimes the third part, is wanting. 212 fabulæ selectæ, gr. et l. Regii, Dion. Bertoch. 1487. 4°. 38 leaves, with the signatures a-e.

It commences with a letter of Accursius to Turrianus, and is nothing but a literal reprint of the third part of the preceding

edition.

Likewise very scarce. It commences without any title on the recto of the first leaf: Gbr. Bracius Brasichellensis bonarū artiu cultoribus S. Sometimes with the letters of Phalaris of 1498. See below.— Esopi fabule græco-lat. 298. secund. edit. Gbr. Bracii. Lond. 1709. 12°.

It is so printed that the Greek text may be separated from the Latin translation; so that both are sometimes met with separately. The contents and order are accurately stated at the end. The text of the Aldine is the basis of the two following editions.
