The French Revolution, brought about by the general Kevohition discontent existing at the excessive privileges of the nobles, the unequal taxation, the corruption of the court, 'and the mal-administration of justice, all of which gradually alienated the affections of the people from the government, broke out in 1789. The fidelity of the army had been much weakened by various abuses in its administration. The finances were seriously embarrassed, and Louis XVI. by his irresolution had lost the confidence of all parties. A general cry being raised for the assembly of the StatesGeneral, they were convoked, and the King himself opened liay 5. them, on the 5th of May of this year. The entire power was thus by degrees thrown into the hands of the representatives of the people, and notwithstanding the attempt of the King to close the Chamber, the members re-assembled in another locality, and took an oath not to submit; the French Guards revolted, the Bastile was stormed, and revolutionary clubs under the names of Jacobins and Girondins were formed, which afterwards exercised much influence..
