[The excessively rare first edition of this remarkable Translation described by Southey as the "Common Sewer of the Language." The late Earl of Ashburnham regarded this copy as unique, and Mr. E. Arber states that only one other is known, which is in the Britwell Library. Lowndes only quotes it doubtfully on the authority of the Gentleman's Magazine, N.S., xxii., 603. It contains title, dedication "Too my verie looving Broother thee Lord of Dunsanye" (3 leaves), "Too the learned Reader" (2 leaves), and text pp. 110.-Catalogue.]

[This is the third and last of Caxton's impressions of the Golden Legend; to which Wynkin de Worde contributed the Colophon after Caxton's death. Lord Spencer's (now Mrs. Rylands's) is the only perfect copy known, and only nine copies of any sort are enumerated by Blades.
