had it. In 17. of Henry VII. Lord Willoughby de Brook had it, and in this family it has co. tinued to the present time.

The manor house, which is about half a mile from the village, on the road to Swayton, tradi tion says was once the residence of Bishop Latimer, but this is a mistake; it is called Thorpe Latimer; there is a moated area near it, inclosing about half an acre-the lands about the House are antient inclosure, containing about 150 acres of which 40 acres are in Swayton, the remainder in Helpringham, and belong to Lord Willoughby de Broke.

After the death of Sir Henry de Nottingham, about 29. Henry III. (1245,) Robert Lexingtou founded a chantry, at the altar of St. John the Evangelist, where the bones of the said Sir Hen-" ry de Nottingham do rest, to pray for his soul and procured lands in Helpringham and other places in Lincolnshire, for the monastery of Sixhills, the monks of which were obliged to pay 10 marks yearly to the chapter of Southwell for that purpose.

The Church,

Is an ancient gothic building, consisting of mid

dle and side ailes, a chancel and spire steeple, containing five bells. Here are no pews, but the oaken stalls are remarkably grod, and in excellent repair. The Font hss been very handsome, but it is sadly mutilated. The arches are fine, and supported by clustered pillars. Here is also a good singing gallery, a handsome pul pit, and, altogether, the church is kept remarkably neat and clean, and has been lately fresh painted.

We noted the following inscriptions.

On a brass plate in the north wall:

Here lyeth the body of Anthonie Newlove the elder, patron of the vicarage of this church, who departed this world ye fift daye of Oct. 1579.

Also a monument; In memory of Boaz Baxter late of this place Gent, who died August the 31, 1804, aged 74 years.

In the chancel floor. To the memory of Mary, danghter of Wm. Cawdron Gent. buried March 14, 1719, aged 28.

On a tablet in the south wall is one:

To the memory of Constance, wife of John Springthorp who died in 1741 aged 69 years.

In the south wall of the chancel are three. stone stalls, and a Piscina.

The oldest register is the following. Thomas Ranby was baptized the 2nd of Jan, 1559.

The church is dedicated to St Andrew, patron Ms. Lomax. It is a discharged vicarage valued in the king's books at 8 3s. 4d..

MODERN STATE.

The

John Pevto Verney. Lord Willoughby de Brooke, is Lord of the manor; Mr. John Tomlinson, is also. Lord of a small manor Parish contains about 3000 acres of land. The soil of the high land is, chiefly, clay, and most fit for wheat and beans. The fen is part clay, and part silt, with a small portion of moor, which is fit för oats, and other grain. A change in the mode of cultivation is sometimes advan tageous. Some Landlords allow two crops and one fallow, while others allow only one, laying down with seeds for one season &c. The tithes were exonerated by land in lieu, at the time of the inclosure, in the year 1773.

The principal proprietors are, Lord Willough by de Brook, who owns about one third of the parish Mr. S. J. Baxter; Mr. John Tomlinson; Mr. W. Parke; The Rev. Mr. Litchford; &c.

BELTON,

Is a small village in the Soke of Grantham i the parts of Kesteven, about 2 miles nearly north from Grantham, and 24 south from Lincoln. At this place is the handsome seat of the right honorable Viscount Alford, of Alford in Lincoln shire, and Earl Brownlow.

Doomsday Account.

Land of the King. In Beltone (Belton), there are eighteen sokemen, and fourteen bordars with fourteen ploughs, and sixty eight acres of meadow.

Land of Walter de Aincurt. In Beltone ‹ Belton) hundred, Tori had four carucates of land to be taxed. Land to four ploughs. Walter de Aincurt has two ploughs in the demesne, and eight villanes and five bordars with one plough. There is a church, and three mills of thirty shillings, and forty acres of meadow. Value in
