died in 1807, and was succeeded by his eldest son John Cust, Barón Brownlow, and a Baronet, Lord Lieutenant, Custos Rotulorum, and. Vice Admiral of the County of Lincoln.

His Lordship was born in 1779, and married in 1810, Sophia, daughter of Sir Abraham Hume. By this Lady, he has a daughter, Sophia Frances. A son, John Hume, born Oct. 16, 1812,And another son Charles Henry, born Sep. 27, 1813. Her Ladyship, at the early age of 25 died suddenly on the 21st. of February 1814, to the expressible grief of her Lord and all her fami

The latter end of September, 1815, the Prince Regent was pleased to confer the dignities of Viscount and Earl, on JohnÇust Lord Brownlow, and his heirs, by the title of Viscount Alford, of Aiford in Lincolnshire, and Earl Brownlow.

The Church.

The Church is an ancient structure, part of the interior from the style of its architecture seems to be nearly coeval with the Conquest, The Norman age appears in the great circular

Column of eleven feet in circumference, and in the two large circular arcbes which spring from it and divide the nave from the side aile. the rest of the building the pointed style prevails, but with few ornaments, the architecturebeing generally plain. The church consists of a nave, north aile, and chansel, with a tower at the west end. On the south side of the church is au elegant gothic porch, with a stone groined roof, also on the north side a gothic chapel is erected as a burial place for the Family, and of of* which a principal ornament wil: be a monument to the memory of Sophia Lady Brownlow, now preparing in Italy by the celebrated Sculptor Canova. In the church are many monuments. One to the memory of Richard Brownlow, who died in 1638, is a good specimen of the style which prevailed in that age. There is a very handsome monument to Vicount Tyrconnel, well executed by Cheere, and one to the memory of Sir John Cust Speaker of the House of Commons, by Tyler. The Font, which is of great antiquity, is an octagon, decorated with rude and curious Sculpture. The interior of the church is well fined up, and kept in good order The register Commences in 1538, It mentions that there were

buried in 1643, three soldiers killed at Belton fight; and in 1644, nine persons who died of the plague.

MODERN STATE.

Earl Brownlow is Lord of the manor, sole Proprietor of land in the parish, and Patron of the Living.

The parish contains about sixteen hundred acres of Land, and is subject to tithes. The fences are thorn hedges. The soil in the eastern part of the Lordship is Heathy Creach, in the middle Sandy Loam, and in the western part Clav.

LONDONTHORPE is a hamlet to Grantham, in the soke of Grantham, in the parts of Kesteven, about 3 miles N, E. from that place.

Domesday Account.

Land of the King In Lundertorp (Londonthorpe there are twenty-one sokemen and six villanes with five ploughs, and forty-four acres of meadow, and one mill of ten shillings.

Land of Osmund Bishop. In Lundetorp (Londonthorp) there are fifteen oxgangs of land to be taxed. Land to two ploughs. This land belongs to the church of Grantham, and is free from all services. Osmund Bishop has there seven villanes with one plough,and thirteen acres of meadow.

Land of Colegrim. In Lundetorp (Londonthorp) six oxgangs of land to be taxed. Land Berewick in Belton (Belton.) Cole

John de la Launde and Rrehard Hawley had the manor of Londonthorpe 5. Hen. V (Sauderson's M. S.) Francis Hall died 6. Edw. VI,. and left to Arthur Hall is son, situs uuper mon-asterii* in Londonthorpe are lands and tene>ments here and in Toulthorp.

Toulthorp is a small tract of land adjoining the Witham, most of which is in Belton Park Human Skeletons have been found in Toulthorp where it is conjectured that there was a burying
