Near to this place lie the bodies of Mr. Roger Stephens late Rector of this Parish, and Susanna

his wife, she died Nov. 29, he Dec. 7, 1712. As also Lucy their daughter, and wife of Mr Nathan. Knowles, vicar of Syston, who died June 24, 1724 aged 23 years.

On flat stones in the Chancel.

Here lieth the body of Mary Buck, relict of Peregrine Buck, Gent. who departed this life May 7, 1704, Etatis suæ 70.

Here lieth Peregrine Buck Gent: who died Feb. 28, 1693. Also Mary the wife of John Longland Gent: died Oct. 22, 1741, aged 36 years, And Thos. their son, and Mary their daughter. Also Mary Wilson daughter of John and Mary Longland, died Sep. 14, 1762, aged 28 years.

The church is dedicated to St. Nicholas, and, is in the Patornage of the prebendary of North, Grantham, in the Church of Sarum

Alms Houses and School.

Richard Hickson Esq.of Gonerby, in the County of Lincoln, did, by will, devise, that his Executor should, within 12 months next after his decease, erect and build an almshouse in Barkston, for the habitation of six poor poople, and did give, limit, and appoint unto Wm. Welby and J. Newton, and their heirs and assigns, forty three pounds per annum, issuing out of certain, and all his lands at Greetham, in the county of Rutland, for the use, maintenance, and sustentation of the said six poor people, and their suce, cessors for ever, and for the sustaining, upholding, and repairing of the, said almshouse; each poor person to receive 61, 13s, 4d, annually, and the other three pounds per annum to be bestowed upon the repairs of the said almshouse; Wm, Welby to have the nomination during his life. and after his decease J, Newton and his heirs, or

such other as should be the right owner of his lands in Barkston for ever; each poor persou must be 60 years of age, or more, and an inhabitant of Barkston, Hayther, Aseby or Culverthorp and who have received collection from the town where they lived for one whole year; but should there be no person qualified as above, then his will was that some other person, most aged and poor, living within the said towns, should be elected.

Wm. Welby of Denton, his cousin, was constituted and appointed his sole executor. Will dated October 2, 1640.

Besides the above charity, there is a school eudowed with a field, worth 57. per annum, and a house for the master, for which he is to teach six poor children. This is supposed to have been left by some of the Newton' family.

MODERN STATE.

Mrs. Houblin and Mrs. Piggot, as heirs of the Newton family, are Ladies of the manor. The parish contains about 1700 acres of land, which is liable to tithes. The fences are thorn

hedges, the soil creech and clay.

About half

the parish on the plough. The road leading from Grantham to Lincoln passes through this village, which contains some good houses very pleasantly situated. The principal proprietors of land are, Sir. John Thorold and the ladies of the manor.

DENTON.

Denton, is a neat village in the soke of Grantham in the parts of Kesteven, about 4 miles south westerly from Grantham.

In Dentone (Denton) there are eight acres of meadow.

Land of Robert de Todeni, In Dentone vel Huuelle (Denton or Howell) Eddiva liad six carucates of land to be taxed. Land to as many ploughs. Robert has there in the demesne three pughs, and thirteen villanes with four ploug he. Caue in King Edward's time four pounds and
