MODERN STATE.

Sir W. Manners is Lord of the manor, and proprietor of the parish, which contains about 2600 acres of land. The tithes are exonerated by land in lieu, at the inclosure in 1772; the fences thorn hedges, the soil creach princicipally, with some clay, and is good corn land, but requires a good deal of manure. The river With. am runs just by the east side of the town. Part of the mano-house, built by Anthony Ellys, is remaining; it is situated a little to the S. W. of the church, and in the middle of the village, which abounds with springs of pure water, rising out of the rock, and running into the river Witham.

Chequered pavements, and Roman coins have been found here.
