The Church.

Is a small structure consisting of a nave and north aile, a chancel and tower steeple, holding 3 bells. The pillars are round, supporting some beautiful saxon arches, finely ornamented. A plain stone font; the church is well pewed, and in the chancel are three stone stalls, and a Piscina.

On a mural monument at the east end of the north aile, is an incription, to the memory of Richard Walburge Gentlemen, of Stamford, who died A. D. 1715, aged 54 years. It is a discharged vicarage valued in the King's books at 51. 11s. 8d. Dedicated to St. Martin, Patrons the Governors of Oakham and Uppingham Schools.

'MODERN STATE.

John Ullett Esq. is Lord of the manor of Barholm cum Stow. The parish contains about 1177 acres. The soil is a light loam upon ravel, fences quick hedges, and the Tithes are exonerated. The principal proprietors of land are John Ullett Esq. and Sir John Trolope.

STOW..

Is a hamlet to Barholm, it contains (only

two houses though it has evidently been much

larger.

Domesday Account.

Land of St. Peter de Burg.-In Estou (Stow) in the soke of Witham, are four oxgangs and a half of land to be taxed. Land to as many oxen. Asfort has there under the Abbot one villane and two sokemen with half a plough.

In the same are two oxgangs of land to be taxed. Land to two ploughis. The oke is in Werche ( ) belonging to St. Peter de Burg. Godfrey has there under the Abbot one villane and two sokemen with half a plough. Value in King Edward's time three shillings, the same

now.

Soke. In Estou (Stow) six oxgangs of land and a half to be taxed. Five sokemen have there half a plough.

Land of Alured of Lincoln.--Soke. In Estou (Stow) one oxgang and a half to be taxed. Land to one ox and a half. Alured has there one church which belongs to Uffington.

The hamlet contains about 600 acres of landThe Tithes exonerated. In 1705 Lord Exeter was lord of the manor, and in 1751 it belonged

to Michael Tyson Esq. It now belongs to Joha Ullett Esq.

The Chapel.

Which stood in a pasture S. E. of the house where James Ullett Esq. now resides, was taken down about 35 years ago; some grave stones with incriptions, have been found just beneath the su face; the stones belonging to the chapel were used for building a barn, and the bell was taken to Barholm church. The foundation of the Chapel may still be ascertained, as well as the foundations of many other buildings n the same field, which is contiguous to the road leading from West Deeping to Stow, it also joins the road leading from Langtoft to Stow.

BRACEBOROUGH.

Braceborough is a small village in the wapentake of Ness, in the parts of Kesteven, about

niles nearly N. E. from Stamford, and one

north of Gretford.

Domesday Account.

Land of Robert de Todeni.- In Bresebreu (Braceborough) and Barnetone (

Land of Robert de Staford.-In Breeseburg (Braceborough) and Carnetorp ( ) Dane and Carle and Ledflet had twenty oxgargs of land to be taxed. Laud to as many oxen. The land of two of these was free soke under Dane.. Goisfrid, a vassal of Robert's, has there one plough, and four villanes with half a plough, and two mills of twenty shillings, and a third part of the church, and seven acres of meadow, and fifty-five acres of coppice wood. Value in King Edward's time sixty shillings, now forty. In the same, Carle and Dane four oxgaugs of

land to be taxed. Land to four oxen,

The

soke is in Greteford (Greatford) a manor of Turgot, lagman. It is waste.

The Church

Is a very ancient gothic building, consisting of a nave and chancel, and a spire steeple with 2 bel's. Here is a curious square stone font, a few stalls, but most pews; the pulpit is mean, and painted black.

A marble monument to the memory of Titus Livie esq. and another to Jane Wansey. Very poor church and in bad repair. It is a rectory valued in the King's books at 91. 10s. 3d. Dedieated to St. Margaret, Patron the King.

MODERN STATE.

Dr. Willis of Gretford is Lord of the manor. The parish coulams about acres of land, The soil is cheifly a brown clay. The fences quick hedges. The tithes are exonerated by a corn rent. Dr. Willis is the principal proprietor of land in this parish. About half a mile N. W. from the church is a very excellent Spa, which has been of much use to patients afflicted with scorbutic and other complaints; a bathing
