died 29. Henry VI. being seized of the manors of Swineshead, Sixhill, and Bloxham, with the patronage of Swineshead Abbey, as also of the parish church of Swineshead, free chapel of Birthorpe, and advowson of the church of Bloxham, leaving Richard his son and heir 19 years old.

In the wall of the abbey house (the present residence of R. Calthorp Esq,) which seems of the last centry, and has over the south front a shield with a chevron between three escollopes, is fixed a battered figure of a cross-legged knight in mail, round belmet, surcot, shield and sword broken off at the knees.

Tradition calls this the monk who poisoned King John, but it more probably belongs to the founder of the abbey here, Robert de Gresley, who held this manor in the time of Henry III, (Gough's Sepulchral Monuments.)

MANOR.

In 2 Edward III Sir John la Warre had this manor it continued in this family till the 4. Henry VI, when Thomas la Warre left it to Reginald West, who left it, the patronage of the Abbey and the Advowson of the church, to Richard his

son 19 years old. It next belonged to the Nevils, then to the Latimers, and 17. Henry VII. to Lord Willoughby de Brooke.

The parliamentary army was beat by the roy alists under Colonel Cavendish, at Donington in the County of Lincoln on the 10. of June 1643. Two of the slain were buried in the chancel (Baker's Chron. pa, 526.)
