Document: Great Britain.-Stamp Office. [1765?] An embossed stamp for ten shillings, on a small strip of paper. Beside it is stamped in ink a crown and circle, lettered: "One Penny Pr Sheet," with an "s" below. EM. 1799

The stamp is shield-shaped, and about an inch and a half high. At the top stands the word "AMERICA"; immediately below is the crown; under this the royal arms, supported by the lion and unicorn; at the bottom, "X. SHILLINGS.

The ros. duty was paid on Appeals, Writs of Errors, etc.; Appointments to public offices with salary above £20 per annum; Probates of Wills, Letters of Administration, etc., in all parts of British America except the Continent and the Bermuda and Bahama islands (where the duty was 5s.); and on every pair of dice. Pamphlets and newspapers larger than half a sheet and not exceeding one whole sheet paid a duty of id.5 Geo. III. c 12. Cf. EM. 227 and 1479.

James Abercrombie is to succeed the Earl of Loudoun as Commander-in-Chief; he is to be obeyed and given all assistance; if he so orders an embargo is to be laid by the Governor upon all ships in the province; the commander of the squadron about to be sent must also be given all intelligence relative to his department, and must be supplied with such sailors and workmen as he may need.
