TO OUR SUBSCRIBERS.

MOST respectfully, most gratefully do we acknowledge the high and lasting obligation conferred upon us, by so many of our noble Patronesses, in kindly enabling us, by the loan of their valuable Portraits, to persevere in the plan of forming a PICTURE GALLERY OF THE FEMALE NOBILITY OF BRITAIN; a Gallery which, not only in the present age, but by remote posterity, will, with its Illustrative Memoirs, be regarded with delight and enthusiasın-will be referred to as a proud and sacred memorial of beauty, virtue, and talent.

Next to our Noble Patronesses themselves, thanks are due, and are cordially tendered, to the Artists who, by their friendly services, have promoted our views in obtaining Portraits, and (to ensure fidelity of representation) in obligingly superintending the progress of the engraver. That Artists, as well as the Noble Personages whose Portraits we have had the honour of introducing to the world, are eminently gratified with the beautiful and highly-finished style of engraving adopted in LA BELLE ASSEMBLÉE-the only Periodical of note that now presents its Subscribers with Portraits-we are authorized to affirm. It was the remark of one of the most distinguished painters of the day, when recently inspecting some of our proof impressions, that " he should be very happy to see any of the productions of his pencil transferred to copper in a similar style of execution."

The First, Second, and Third Volumes of LA BELLE ASSEMBLÉE (New Series) already published, are enriched with Portraits, accompanied by Illustrative Memoirs, Historical and Genealogical, as follows:

1. Lady Elizabeth Belgrave, the Countess of Denbigh, Lady Ducie, Viscountess Ebrington, Lady Eleanor Lowther, and Miss Jane Porter.

2. Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Kent, Lady Alicia Peel, Lady Grantham, the Countess of Charleville, Lady Emily Fielding, and Lady Emily Pusey.

3. The Countess of Surrey, Lady Georgiana Agar Ellis, the Countess of Jersey, Amelia Anne Marchioness of Londonderry, Viscountess Tullamore, and Lady Isabella Anne Brydges.

Of our Plates of Fashionable Costume, drawn and tinted from nature, and, with their letter-press explanations, forming at once a present picture and a durable record of Female Fashions, French and English, it is in this place unnecessary to speak.

Nor are we desirous of expatiating on the Original Papers connected with the Belles Lettres, by upwards of fifty of which the present volume is adorned. Their

intrinsic merit is sufficiently attested by the fact, that, no sooner is a Number of LA BELLE ASSSMBLÉE published, than its contents are, without permission or acknowledgment, transferred to other periodicals.

In the critical department of LA BELLE ASSEMBLÉE-Literary, Musical, Pictorial, &c., independently of the Theatres-more than two hundred different subjects have been noticed, in the present volume. This can be affirmed of no other Monthly Miscellany extant.

That they, by whose support and patronage we are honoured, are satisfied with our exertions, we possess the most substantial proof; and with that flattering stimulus for the future, we at present rest content.

*PROOF IMPRESSIONS of the Portraits in LA Belle AssemblÉE may be had of MR. COLNAGHI, Cockspur Street, and of the principal Printsellers in London, on 4to. Colombier, India Paper, 5s., plain 4s.

TO SUBSCRIBERS AND CORRESPONDENTS.

A PRIVATE Communication shall be forwarded to the translator of " Italian TalesNo. I."

For the kind wishes of the author of " The Soldier's Bridal," our best thanks are very cordially returned. We regret our inability to insert the poem.

"W. B." will perceive, that we have not found it necessary to give his versification of the "Chinese Ode:" it would not improve the effect.

The appearance of " J. B. B.'s" verses in another publication at the same time as in LA BELLE ASSEMBLEE, formed an odd coincidence. Under the circumstances of the case, their author, we are sure, has forgiven us for the somewhat angry feeling which we felt ourselves justified in expressing.

As the fair author of " The Sultana and her Slave, a Turkish Fragment," cannot meet our wishes, we will endeavour, if permitted, to meet her's. She is ever in the possession of our most friendly regards.

Need we say that we are at all times most happy to hear from the Bard of Yoxford? What progress is he making with his new poem?

The Rev. author of "The Derwent," &c. is another of our esteemed friends whose communications always afford us sincere pleasure.

We hope soon to receive another contribution from the author of " The King's Stag." We have had the pleasure of disposing of the papers of our good friend, "W. C. S." as requested.

The Verses of "AMATOR are not likely to make his fortune with the fair.

The "Elegy on the Death of a White Bear" is, we presume, the first effort of an Esquimaux poet.

"A Snow-Storm," by LUCINDA," is a very seasonable effusion, but not equally agreeable.

We shall be glad to hear again from "B. N."
