ARITHMETIC.

The Board of Examiners.

Every result must be reduced to its simplest form. The whole of the working of a question must be sent in as part of the answer.

1. Find, without unnecessary work, the cube of 3.1415926...correct to four places of decimals.

2. If a cubic inch of water at a certain temperature weighs 252.458 grains, which is the

accurate of the following rough statements:— A cubic foot of water weighs 1,000 ozs., a cubic yard weighs three-fourths of a ton?

3. A rectangular sheet of tin of uniform thickness is 85 centimetres wide and 2.7 metres long, and weighs 536 grams. Find its thickness if I cubic centimetre of tin weighs 7.3 grams.

4. It was discovered by Kepler that the squares of the times of revolution of the planets round the sun are to one another in the ratio of the cubes of their distances from the sun. If the distances of the earth and Mars from the sun are 92 millions and 140 millions of miles respectively, find how long it takes Mars to make one revolution round the sun.

5. Divide £31 12s. 6d. among A, B, C, and D so that A's share shall be to B's as 2 to 3, B's to C's as 5 to 6, and C's to D's as 8 to 9.

6. What is the cost of papering a room 39 feet 10 inches long, 28 feet 1 inches broad, and 15 feet

high with paper 2 feet 6 inches wide, and costing 6d. per dozen yards?

7. The commercial present worth of a sum due 219 days hence at 5 per cent. is £499 11s. What is the sum, and what is its true present worth?

8. The manufacturer of an article makes a profit of 25 per cent., the wholesale dealer makes a profit of 20 per cent., and the retail dealer makes a profit of 28 per cent. What is the cost to the manufacturer of an article which is retailed for 16s.?

9. A person buys 6 per cent. bonds, the interest on which is payable yearly, and which are to be paid off at par 3 years after the time of purchase. If money be worth 5 per cent., what price should he give for the bonds?

10. If the duty on a certain commodity were reduced 20 per cent. of the present amount, by how much per cent. must the consumption be increased that the same revenue may be derived from it? And by how much, that the revenue may be increased by 20 per cent.?

GEOGRAPHY.

The Map must be attempted.

1. Draw a map of the mainland of Australia. Mark on the map every tenth parallel of latitude; the colonies, with the chief town in each; and the principal mountains, lakes, and rivers.

2. Give the exact position, and mention any advantages of position from a commercial point of view, of Auckland, Chicago, Constantinople, Cork, Hamburg, Lisbon, Nanking, Odessa, Rio Janeiro, Southampton.

3. Explain the terms-Berber, Celt, cirrus, co-tidal line, dew-point, ecliptic, exotic, fen, precession of the equinoxes, republic.

4. Write an account of the political geography of the European possessions in Africa, south of the Equator.

5. Describe the physical geography of the United States.

6. Explain carefully the causes of the tides.

7. Write a short account of the foreign possessions of Holland.

8. Give the chief characteristics of the leading mountain systems of Europe.

9. Define longitude. How would you determine the difference of solar time between two places, say Melbourne and New York?

10. Write an essay on the trade of Great Britain with her colonies.

CHEMISTRY.

The Board of Examiners.

1. What gases are contained in the atmosphere? Give their approximate proportions by volume. By what substances may the various ingredients be absorbed, and what is the nature of the actions which then occur?

2. What happens when (a) hydrogen is passed through a tube containing red-hot copper oxide, (b) steam is passed through a tube containing red-hot iron?

3. What are the products of the electrolysis of strong hydrochloric acid? In what proportions are they obtained (a) by volume, (b) by weight?

4. How can it be proved that diamond is a form of pure carbon?

5. How does dilute sulphuric acid act on the following sodium salts ?-(a) A carbonate, (b) a sulphite, (c) a nitrite, (d) a cyanide. Describe what happens, and also give equations.
