In this work Evelyn gives an interesting picture of the London of his time, and the proportions that the Smoke nuisance had assumed even then. He offered many

A most important little volume for the information it gives of London trades in the XVIIIth century. It forms the subject of a chapter in Sir Walter Besant's volume upon Eighteenth Century London.

505 HEMING (Edmund), The Case of Edmund Heming, who First set up the New Lights in the City of London. London, printed in the year 1689. Sm. 4to, half calf, gilt edges, 2l. 10s. Heming obtained letters patent, about 1684, for the exclusive right of lighting London for five years, and undertook to place a light before every tenth door on moonless nights from Michaelmas to Lady-day. He relates the story of his troubles in this rare pamphlet, and complains of " one Mr. Vernatti, who set up the Glass Lights in Cornhill" and of much opposition from the Lord Mayor's Officers, also the Companies of Tallow-Chandlers, Tin-Men and Horners "infested him beyond example." At the end of his "Case" he advertises-" If any Gentlemen or others, are willing to be accommodated with New Lights in their Streets, Houses, Stables, or for Coaches or Horses that Travel late at night, they may be furnished therewith by Edmund Heming, living near the Still-yard in Thames-street. And if any Gentleman has a desire to have his Coat of Arms, or any other Fancy appear in the said Light, it shall be performed by the said Heming, in a very curious manner.'
