LONDON AND MIDDLESEX-continued.

582 TOTTENHAM.—The Turnament of Tottenham, or, the wooing, winning, and wedding, of Tibbe, the reeu's daughter there. Written long since in verse, by Mr. Gilbert Pilkington, at that time as some haue thought Parson of the Parish. London, John Norton, [1631].-A Briefe Description of the towne of Tottenham High-Crosse in Middlesex: Together with an historicall Narration of such memorable things as are there to bee seene and obserued. London, John Norton, 1631. 2 vols. in I, sm. 4to, FIRST EDITION (a few lower edges shaved), calf neat, gilt edges, very rare, gl. 9s.

This celebrated humorous poem was here first published from a XIVth Century Manuscript in the possession of George Wither the poet, by his friend, Wm. Bedwell, Vicar of Tottenham, who at the same time appended to it the" Briefe Description of Tottenham High-Crosse." He was one of the translators of the Authorised Version of the Bible, and has been styled the father of Arabic study in England; the quaint and serious preface which he contributes is an amusing contrast to the rollicking humour of the poem that follows.

The last leaf of the Epicede is slightly damaged, and the large folding plate of the hearse is wanting as usual, in fact it is only known to exist in two copies, the Grenville copy in the Br. Museum, and the Huth copy (which sold recently for £51). The poem contains an interesting reference to the unfortunate Virginian Expedition of Sir Thomas Gates, which was wrecked on the Bermudas in 1609. The adventures encountered by the party are said to have furnished Shakespeare with the groundwork of the play of " The Tempest."
