REQUIREMENTS OF THE NEW CODE

FOR

STANDARD IV,

READING. “A few lines of poetry or prose, at the choice of the inspector."

WRITING. “ A sentence slowly dictated once, by a few words at a time, from a reading book such as is used in the first class of the school."

ARITHMETIC.

“Compound rules (common weights and measures)."

[blocks in formation]

In this STANDARD lessons in Geography are introduced, and a few descriptions of scenes in foreign countries are combined with lessons in Natural History. The selections made from English History are of a representative kind, marking some of the principal epochs in our national life, and will help to fill up the details of the Historical Tables to be found at the end.

The two original pieces, “The Chieftain” and “The Earl of Leicester,” are composed as exercises on the diphthongs “ei” and “ie,” and may be used as Dictation Exercises in STANDARD V.

The Editor is greatly indebted to the Rev. H. C. Adams and Messrs. George Routledge & Sons for the ready courtesy with which they have allowed him to make long extracts from their “Tales for Boys;" to Dean Stanley for illustrations of foreign travel, &c.; to Messrs. Bell & Daldy, for the pieces taken from “ Brandt's Antiquities," and their “Life of Columbus”; to Messrs. Strahan & Co., for the extracts from Tennyson's Poems; to Sir E. Creasy, Mr. Carpenter, and also to Mr. Murray, Mr. Hodges, and many other authors and publishers for the use of their respective works.
