Marthal Lippe, Lord 'Loudon, and Brig. Burgyne, which gives an account of the gallant behaviour of the troops in an attack that was made by the Spaniards at the Pass of Alvito, which they carried, as it were, by confent; but were effectually furprifed in their camp at Villa Velba, by a detachment of Brig Burgoyne's corps, who routed the cavalry, killed a great number, made many prifoners, fpiked fix pieces of cannon, and defroyed their magazines. Most of the Spanish officers who exe tel themfelves to rally the troops, fell, among those was a Brigadier-General. SUNDAY 31.

By an account published by authority inFrance, there is this remarkable acknowledg ment of the barbarous ufage of the French towards the conquered inhabitants of Nerofound- C land, the very reverie of what is practifed by the English towards their conquered enemies." "The Chevalier de Boifgelin, a lieutenant, is returned from his expedition to the North of St John's. He there deftroyed the forts of Trinity and Carbonear, where he found 32 pieces of cannon, and all forts of arms. allo blew up the powder-mills, and burnt 400 D fishing beats, and the flages for drying fib. He returned to St John's with his five verfels laden with fait and bifcuit. Monfieur de la Morte Vauvert, a lieutenant, who arrived at Trinity before the other in a veffel of 40 men, had reduced the fort, and compelled 800 of the inhabitants to furrender at difcre tion, and maintained that poft with 30 men, till the arrival of M. de Boifgelin, for whom he waited 17 hours.

There has lately been erected a monument in St Nicholas's chapel, at Lynn in Norfolk, to the memory of the late Sir Benj. Keene, who was a native of that town. It confifts of a circu lar urn, placed on a square pedestal: A bas relief on one fide the urn, represents the figure of Peace feated before her temple, holding an F olive branch in one hand, and trampling under foot the emblems of war, and with the other hand the points to different perfons employed in loading and unloading fhips, which alludes to the great attention Sir Benjamin always had to the peace and commercial interests of his country. On the oppofite fide of the urn, within a circle ornamented with G the collar of the Knights of the Bath, is introduced his portrait in the manner of a medallion, and on each fide of it the badges of the order, and enfigns of his office. On the Eides of the pedestal are pannels for infcriptions, and in one of them is inferted the following:

Sacred to the memory of Sir BENJAMIN H * KERNA, Knight of the Bath, Ambaffador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the court of Spain, an able and faithful servant to his king and country; honoured and beloved at the court where he refided, valued ⚫ and lamented by his royal tuaster George the • fecond.'
