Both HAZLITT and LOWNDES mention the poem as printed in 1661, and give the full title as it appears (separately) in this volume, BUT THEY DO NOT SEEM TO HAVE BEEN AWARE OF THE FACT THAT IT FORMED ONLY A PORTION OF THE WORK. The 3074 NEWCASTLE (DUCHESS OF,-MARGARET CAVENDISH). POEMS, AND | FANCIES: WRITTEN By the Right HONOVRABLE, the Lady Counteffe of NEWCASTLE. LONDON, Printed by T. R. for J. Martin, and J. On inside cover is written "ELIZABETH, Countess of Bristol, her BOOK, 1738." LOWNDES states that this work contains A PORTRAIT of the COUNTESS ENGRAVED by VAN SCHUPPEN, but he was doubtless in error, as the portrait appears in her PLAYS of 1662-8. HAZLITT makes no mention of the portrait, and as the copy described (now in the BRITISH MUSEUM), was the Countess's own, it is likely she added the portrait. NOTE IN THE HANDWRITING OF JAMES Bindley RELATING TO THE WORK. AN EXCEPTIONALLY RARE VOLUME. The Bibl. Angl. Poet. states it as UNLIKELY THAT THERE WERE AS MANY AS THREE COPIES EXTANT, though at the present time THERE ARE AT LEAST FOUR KNOWN. The history of this copy is most interesting. MR. BINDLEY secured it from ScOTT's (Bookseller) Catalogue in 1804 for £2. 8. o. It sold at the Bindley sale in 1819 at £21. 10. 6. MR. PERRY purchased it, and at his sale it was bought by MR. JOLLEY. It soon passed into the possession of MR. HEBER, thence to MR. BRITWELL, and from him to MR. H. G. REED, who, in 1880, added a facsimile of the title-page. MR. MCKEE was the next in this rather notable list of owners, having procured the copy about 1890. It will be noticed that even in its imperfect state, such collectors as BINDLEY, PERRY, JOLLEY and HEBER were glad to include it among their treasures. |
